“トマト給食”始まる トマトのブランド化進める宇都宮市で|NHK ... - nhk.or.jp

Elton John addresses Britain's Parliament, urging lawmakers to do more to fight HIV/AIDS

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

LONDON -- Elton John has urged British lawmakers to do more to fight HIV and AIDS, saying the U.K. can be the first country in the world “to defeat this awful virus.”

The British star spoke to lawmakers and campaigners in the grand Speaker’s House of Parliament on Wednesday evening at an event honoring his dedication to fighting HIV in the U.K. and beyond.

"I implore you not to waste your allotted time as political leaders,” John urged dozens of lawmakers packed into the ornate gold-trimmed room. “Take action and push things a little further than might feel comfortable. And as you do, I can promise you this: I will be there with you."

John set up his AIDS Foundation in 1992 and has helped raise millions of dollars to prevent HIV infections and reduce stigma.

"This evening I was privileged to welcome Sir Elton John and acknowledge his exceptional contribution to the global fight against HIV and AIDS — personally and through the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said on X, formerly Twitter.

“His work embodies the solidarity and kindness that defines our shared humanity," he added.

John welcomed the “truly wonderful news” that the U.K. government has decided to extend a pilot program to test people visiting hospital emergency rooms for HIV, which officials say has discovered hundreds of undetected cases of the virus.

Under the program, which was recently introduced in London and other cities with a high prevalence of HIV cases, anyone 16 years old or older who has their blood tested in an emergency room will also get tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, unless they opt out of the testing.

“Automatic testing gets to people earlier, which means less HIV transmission, less illness, less death and by the estimate of health economists, 50 million pounds ($63 million) saved for the NHS,” Britain's health service, John said.

Health officials confirmed that the program would be scaled up to 46 more emergency departments across England, helping reach the estimated 4,500 people in England who could be living with undiagnosed HIV.

The Parliament reception for John came ahead of World AIDS Day, which takes place on Friday. The U.K. hopes to achieve zero HIV transmissions in England by 2030, in line with World Health Organization goals.

Earlier Wednesday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also paid tribute to John's AIDS Foundation, saying he was pleased its work was being celebrated in Parliament.

“Sir Elton has been a powerful voice for change in the U.K. and the world,” Sunak told lawmakers. “Through the brilliant work of the AIDS Foundation he has raised awareness of the issue, reduced stigma and saved lives.”

Taylor Swift is Spotify’s most-streamed artist of 2023, ending Bad Bunny's reign

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

LOS ANGELES -- It’s her, hi — Taylor Swift is Spotify’s 2023 most-played artist.

According to Spotify Wrapped, Swift was 2023's most-streamed artist globally, raking in more than 26.1 billion streams since January 1. That means the pop powerhouse has dethroned Puerto Rican reggaetón star Bad Bunny, who held the coveted title for three years in a row beginning in 2020.

He's in the number two slot in 2023, followed by The Weeknd in third, Drake in fourth, and regional Mexican musician Peso Pluma in fifth.

It's not such bad news for Bad Bunny, however: his 2022 album “Un Verano Sin Ti” was Spotify's most-streamed album for the second year in a row, raking in 4.5 billion global streams. In that category, Taylor Swift's “Midnights” trails in second, with SZA's “SOS” in third. All three albums were released last year.

The top five is rounded out with The Weeknd's 2016 album “Starboy” and Karol G's “Mañana Será Bonito,” the only 2023 release to reach the peak.

Miley Cyrus' empowerment anthem “Flowers” is Spotify’s most-streamed song of the year with 1.6 million streams globally.

“Kill Bill” by SZA is the second most-streamed song of the year, while Harry Styles' “As It Was,” BTS member Jung Kook featuring Latto's “Seven,” and Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma's “Ella Baila Sola” came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the U.S., Swift's dominance continued — she was the most streamed artist on the platform, followed by Drake and country star Morgan Wallen. Wallen's “Last Night” was the most streamed song, and his full-length “One Thing at a Time" was the most streamed-album.

On Tuesday, Apple Music announced Wallen’s “Last Night” topped its global song chart in 2023. It has been a banner year for the song, which also stayed atop the Billboard Hot 100 for 16 weeks, tying Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” for the title of second-longest reign in the Hot 100’s 65-year history.

Actor Jonathan Majors' trial on domestic violence charges set to begin Wednesday

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

Marvel actor Jonathan Majors' trial on domestic violence charges is set to begin Wednesday in New York.

Majors, 34, faces misdemeanor assault and harassment charges stemming from an incident in March with his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.

Majors has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he could serve up to a year in prison.

Majors was arrested after officers responded to a 911 call in Manhattan for an alleged domestic dispute. He is accused of twisting Jabbari's arm behind her back, striking her in the head and pushing her into a vehicle, a criminal complaint alleges. She was treated at a hospital for minor neck and head injuries, including a cut to her ear, police said.

The Marvel star has denied the assault and filed a cross-complaint against Jabbari, alleging he was the one assaulted.

"For an excruciating four months, Jonathan Majors, the real victim in this shameful ordeal, has had his life, career, and reputation torn apart," Majors' lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, said in a statement in August. "Yet he remains unwavering in his determination to be absolved from this harrowing ordeal."

His attorney had previously sought to delay the trial, saying prosecutors weren't "timely" in turning over evidence.

Jabbari was arrested in October in New York on multiple charges, though the Manhattan district attorney's office subsequently said it decided not to prosecute her because the case "lacks prosecutorial merit."

"The matter is now closed and sealed," the office said in a statement in October.

Majors is known for his roles in the "Ant-Man" films, as well as starring in the Disney+ TV show, "Loki."

In the role of Kang the Conqueror, Majors is scheduled to appear in "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars."

Majors also was nominated for an Emmy for his role in the HBO series "Lovecraft Country" and starred in the films "Creed III," "Da 5 Bloods" and "The Harder They Fall."

Disney is the parent company of Marvel and ABC News.

'Hunger Games' feasts, 'Napoleon' conquers Thanksgiving box office

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

NEW YORK -- The Walt Disney Co.’s “Wish” had been expected to rule the Thanksgiving weekend box office, but moviegoers instead feasted on leftovers, as “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” led ticket sales for the second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Neither of the weekend’s top new releases — “Wish” and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” — could keep up with Lionsgate's “Hunger Games” prequel. After debuting the previous weekend with $44.6 million, the return to Panem proved the top draw for holiday moviegoers, grossing $28.8 million over the weekend and $42 million over the five-day holiday frame.

In two weeks of release, “Songbirds and Snakes” has grossed nearly $100 million domestically and $200 million globally.

The closer contest was for second place, where “Napoleon” narrowly outmaneuvered “Wish.” Scott's epic outperformed expectations to take $32.5 million over the five-day weekend and an estimated $20.4 million Friday through Sunday. The film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais, was also the top movie globally with $78.8 million.

Reviews were mixed (61% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and ticket buyers were non-plussed (a “B-” CinemaScore), but “Napoleon” fared far better in theaters than its subject did at Waterloo.

“Napoleon,” like Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is a big-budget statement by Apple Studios of the streamer’s swelling Hollywood ambitions. With an estimated budget of $200 million, “Napoleon” may still have a long road to reach profitability for Apple, which partnered with Sony to distribute “Napoleon” theatrically. But it’s an undeniably strong beginning for an adult-skewing 168-minute historical drama.

“Wish,” however, had been supposed to have a more starry-eyed start. Disney Animation releases like “Frozen II” ($123.7 million over five days in 2019), “Ralph Breaks the Internet” ($84.6 million in 2018) and “Coco” ($71 million in 2017), have often owned Thanksgiving moviegoing.

But “Wish” wobbled, coming in with $31.7 million over five days and $19.5 million Friday through Sunday. It added $17.3 million internationally. It had been forecast to debut closer to $50 million.

“Wish," at least, is faring better than Disney’s Thanksgiving release last year: 2022's “Strange World" bombed with a five-day $18.9 million opening. But hopes had been higher for “Wish,” co-written and co-directed by the “Frozen” team of Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and featuring the voices of Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine. “Wish,” a fairy tale centered around a wished-upon star, is also a celebration of Disney, itself, timed to the studio’s 100th anniversary and rife with callbacks to Disney favorites.

Critics weren't impressed, saying “Wish” felt more like a marketing than movie magic. So instead of righting an up-and-down year for Disney, “Wish” is, for now, adding to some of the studio’s recent headaches, including the underperforming “The Marvels.” The Marvel sequel has limped to $76.9 million domestically and $110.2 million overseas in three weeks.

“Wish” also faced direct competition for families in “Trolls Band Together.” The DreamWorks and Universal Pictures release opened a week prior, and took in $17.5 million in its second frame ($25.3 million over five days).

“‘Wish’ ran into a much more competitive market than what Disney might normally see in the Thanksgiving corridor,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore. "We're accustomed to seeing those Disney films at the top of the chart. They kind of had to split the audience with ‘Trolls.’"

Still, the storybook isn’t written yet on “Wish.” It could follow the lead of Pixar’s “Elemental,” which launched with a lukewarm $29.6 million in June but found its legs, ultimately grossing nearly $500 million worldwide.

Also entering wide-release over the holiday weekend was Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” the writer-director’s follow-up to 2020’s “Promising Young Woman.” After debuting in seven packed theaters last weekend, “Saltburn” grossed $3.1 million over five days for Amazon and MGM. Barry Keoghan stars as an Oxford student befriended by a rich classmate (Jacob Elordi) and invited to his family’s country manor.

As Hollywood's award season accelerates (Netflix debuted Bradley Cooper's “Maestro” in select theaters but didn't report grosses), Focus Features' “The Holdovers” continues to be one of the top choices in cinemas. Alexander Payne's film starring Paul Giamatti as a boarding school instructor made $3.8 million over the five-day weekend. In five weeks, it's grossed $12.9 million.

Ticket sales overall reached $172 million in U.S. and Canada theaters over the five-day holiday weekend, according to Comscore. That's up significantly from recent years but well behind the typical pre-pandemic Thanksgiving weekends. (In 2019, sales boosted by “Frozen 2” surpassed $262 million.)

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” $28.8 million.

2. “Napoleon," $20.4 million.

3. “Wish,” $19.5 million.

4. “Trolls Band Together,” $17.5 million.

5. “Thanksgiving,” $7.2 million.

6. “The Marvels,” $6.4 million.

7. “The Holdovers,” $2.8 million.

8. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” $2.3 million.

9. “Five Nights at Freddy's,” $1.8 million.

10. “Saltburn,” $1.7 million.

LONDON -- The winner of the prestigious Booker Prize for fiction will be announced on Sunday. If bookmakers are right, the victorious writer will be named Paul.

Three of the six books competing for the 50,000 pound ($63,000) award are by authors of that name: American novelist Paul Harding’s historical novel “This Other Eden,” Irish writer Paul Lynch’s dystopian story “Prophet Song” and his compatriot Paul Murray’s tragicomic family saga “The Bee Sting.”

The other finalists are Canadian author Sarah Bernstein’s “Study for Obedience,” U.S. writer Jonathan Escoffery’s “If I Survive You” and British author Chetna Maroo’s “Western Lane.”

The winner will receive their trophy during a dinner ceremony in London. British bookmakers ranked Lynch as the favorite to win, followed by Harding and Murray, according to comparison website Oddspedia.

There have been two previous winners named Paul: Paul Scott in 1977 and Paul Beatty in 2016.

Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize is open to novels originally written in English from any country and published in the U.K. and Ireland. It has a reputation for transforming writers’ careers. Previous winners include Ian McEwan, Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie and Hilary Mantel.

A judging panel headed by Canadian novelist Esi Edugyan chose this year's six finalists from 163 books entered for the prize.

Last year’s winner was Shehan Karunatilaka for “The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida,” a satirical “afterlife noir” set during Sri Lanka’s brutal civil war.

Amazon and NFL hoping to establish a tradition with the first Black Friday game

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

It is not a stretch to say the Black Friday game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets is Amazon’s Super Bowl.

Not only does it mean an additional game on Prime Video that Amazon hopes to make into a yearly tradition, but it comes on the busiest shopping day of the year.

“When we talked with the NFL, this is a perfect marriage. Black Friday is a huge event for us every year. We’re really putting everything behind this,” Prime Video Vice President Jay Marine said.

Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media, said the league had been exploring the possibility of adding a game on Black Friday for a while. The Thanksgiving Day tripleheader has been among the most-watched games during the regular season for the past two years.

Adding a Black Friday game gives the NFL another day to take over. Combine it with it airing on Amazon, and it was a match made in and commerce heaven.

“It’s an opportunity for us to continue to innovate with Amazon. I think some of what they’ve done this year on Prime Vision is exciting with seeing that intersection of data and AI predictability and taking fans deeper inside of X’s and O’s,” Schroeder said. “I think the viewing experience will feel a little bit different and unique for that day and appropriately. We’re excited about that.”

Even though Amazon will highlight some deals and promotions throughout the day, it will not feel like Home Shopping Network meets a game.

Marine said some of the Black Friday deals will be highlighted during commercials, and there will be a QR code to scan and shop during the game.

There will be one major promotion per quarter and other deals during the pregame, postgame and halftime shows.

The game will be available for all fans to stream for free. According to Nielsen, the most-viewed Amazon game came in Week 2 this season when the Philadelphia Eagles hosted the Minnesota Vikings.

NFL games are averaging 17.1 million viewers through 11 weeks, which is a 6% increase over last season. The league remains on track for its highest viewership since 2015.

Amazon also will air a concert by Garth Brooks following the game.

“I’m fascinated to see how it plays out in terms of the Amazon component because they’ve taken it out from behind the paywall. So you can watch the game, and if you want to do additional Christmas shopping alongside the game, you will be able to do that. So this is kind of a brand new frontier,” said Al Michaels, who will call the game with Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung. “I’m curious to find out how this works. I mean, there’s a chance in my mind that this could be spectacular.”

With three games on Thanksgiving, a Black Friday matchup, three windows on Sunday and a Monday night game, half of the week’s 16 matchups need national appeal.

During Christmas last year, the league showed it can schedule games on four days and spread the wealth with matchups across all of its media partners.

All 32 teams are playing this week, with 10 of the 16 games being a matchup between teams in the same division.

While college has taken center stage in the past on the day after Thanksgiving, the 3 p.m. Eastern kickoff still gives colleges an early window and prime time. More of the college rivalry games on Thanksgiving weekend have been on Saturday.

Even though it will be Tim Boyle at quarterback for the Jets instead of Aaron Rodgers, the AFC East-leading Dolphins have ascended to national prominence with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyreek Hill leading the offense.

Balloons, bands, celebrities and Santa: Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

NEW YORK -- Beloved characters like Snoopy and SpongeBob SquarePants will take to the skies above New York City Thursday while bands march along the streets below as the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade ushers in the holiday season.

The parade starts on Manhattan's upper west side and makes its way alongside Central Park in front of big crowds and a national television audience before ending up in front of Macy's flagship store on 34th Street.

Among the big names performing is Cher, who just released her first Christmas album. The Oscar-, Emmy- and Grammy Award-winner has a prime spot — performing just before the arrival of Santa Claus, which marks the end of the parade.

Other celebrities and musical groups taking part include Jon Batiste, Bell Biv DeVoe, Brandy, Jessie James Decker, Pentatonix and Miss America 2023 Grace Stanke. The parade also includes performances from the casts of some Broadway shows.

New balloons debuting this year include Leo the lizard, a character from a Netflix film, who is more than 40 feet (12.5 meters) tall, as well as ones that have been there before — like SpongeBob, coming in at 44 feet (13.4 meters).

Some characters, like Snoopy, have been in the parade for many years, but this year's balloon is a new Beagle Scout Snoopy version — celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first appearance in the Peanuts comics.

It's “going to be a magical experience, an experience full of spectacle, full of entertainment, full of joy, full of celebration,” said Will Coss, executive producer of the parade.

The parade isn't just about what's going on in the skies, though. At street level, the procession includes more than two dozen floats, interspersed with marching bands from around the country and a number of clown crews among the 8,000 people participating, organizers said.

This will be the 97th time the parade has been held since 1924.

The broadcast is hosted by Savannah Guthrie, Hoda Kotb and Al Roker from “Today” and airs on NBC.

The 'Oppenheimer' creative team take you behind the scenes of the film's key moments

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

Impossible is often just a starting point on a Christopher Nolan film and “Oppenheimer,”about the father of the atomic bomb, was no exception. In fact, it's often where inspiration was born.

During one especially stressful stretch, filmmakers lost their White House set five days before they had one day to shoot with Gary Oldman, who was flying in to play President Harry S. Truman. The wild scramble to find and construct a new Oval Office is detailed in a making-of documentary included in the newly available home entertainment release.

Looking back on that moment now, producer Emma Thomas can’t help feeling bad about the timing. But she marveled at what the crew accomplished. She told them at the time that if there were ever a zombie apocalypse, they were the people she’d want to be with.

“There’s nothing film crews can’t do. They will move mountains if they have to,” Thomas told The Associated Press. “Every day there’s something that happens and you have to figure out a way out of it. But that’s where the magic happens.”

For some, like production designer Ruth De Jong, that would involve building Los Alamos and finding Washington D.C. in New Mexico. For others, like cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema and editor Jennifer Lame, it was making an “opera of faces and emotions” compelling for three hours.

Key craft department heads spoke to the AP about the challenges and triumphs of making this film, which has earned more than $950 million at the box office.

“Because Chris holds himself to the same standards, everyone’s willing to go there with him,” Thomas said.

Aging 18 principal actors across multiple decades is hard enough, but as makeup lead Luisa Abel and head of hair design Jaime Leigh McIntosh quickly learned, there is no hiding in IMAX. There would be no help from CGI, either.

“We were in the elements a lot and a lot of the actors have prosthetic pieces on. Even younger actors have pieces on before they were meant to be older because I think everybody looks a lot younger now than people did in that era,” Abel said.

They mapped out detailed aging diagrams for each character, which helped enormously in a non-chronological shoot. And Nolan was involved in it all — down to Cillian Murphy’s haircuts.

“He really pays attention to every detail for every department,” McIntosh said. “As an artist it’s incredibly helpful to have a director who is communicative and can give you feedback.”

For as precisely planned as “Oppenheimer” was there were still some last-minute fits of inspiration. A day before they shot Oppenheimer’s post-Trinity test speech in the auditorium, Nolan asked costume designer Ellen Mirojnick to put the audience in bright colors.

Luckily, she was able to get a costumer friend in Los Angeles to pull a big batch of 1940s clothes, in reds, yellows, greens and blues, and ship them to New Mexico within 20 hours. It wasn’t part of the plan but, Mirojnick said, it was the right note for this disorienting scene where Oppenheimer starts having horrific visions about his creation.

“I can’t imagine what it would be if it wasn’t that, because it feels like this kind of crazy dream ... and an insight into his state of mind,” Thomas said. “Who would have thought that the color of the costumes could do that? But they do.”

There was old tape on one of the walls of the narrow, dingy room De Jong found in a shaving company’s old headquarters in Southern California used for Oppenheimer’s security clearance hearing. It was the perfect claustrophobic, unglamourous and period-specific setting for a humiliating ordeal designed to make Oppenheimer feel small.

“Don’t clean this up,” Nolan said. They didn’t.

It was tight, and hot, and the only people who could fit in the room were the actors (usually at least 6 at any given time), Nolan and van Hoytema.

“We like shooting in small spaces with these cameras,” van Hoytema said, recalling the small boat hulls in “Dunkirk.” “All clumped up together is our favorite modus operandi.”

And those scenes ended up being some of Lame’s favorite to edit.

“There’s nothing more interesting than to watch amazing actors sitting in a room. I find it challenging but also immensely satisfying,” Lame said. “It’s amazing what Hoyte and Chris did with room 2022. Every time you went in there, it felt like a totally different kind of scene: It had a different feeling to it, or it had slightly different lighting or the shots were more menacing on certain characters.”

Someone told her that they could have watched Kitty’s testimony, a big moment for actor Emily Blunt near the end of the film, for “20 minutes.” That moment also provided an opportunity for musical innovation with Ludwig Göransson’s score, blending blends Kitty’s theme — a piano and cello — with Oppenheimer’s – a violin.

“It’s a waltz,” he said. “It’s like they’re dancing together.”

For Göransson, “Oppenheimer” was a personal journey that’s allowed him to work alongside his wife, violinist Serena McKinney, and also one that challenged him in unexpected ways.

On the first recording of “Can You Hear the Music,” which has 21 big tempo changes, they did it eight bars at a time. When he glued it all together, it sounded perfect — but perfect felt wrong.

“What I wanted to capture was the energy that I’d seen in the visuals, when I sat there with Andrew Jackson and Chris Nolan in the IMAX theater and they showed me the first visual experiments — like the molecules going around and the energy of being on the brink of discovery,” he said.

They went back and recorded the piece in one take.

“It was like night and day,” he said. “There’s a there’s an energy and a flow that comes in that room of four to six string players playing together and changing tempo together.”

That song alone has been streamed almost 60 million times and viewed 1.5 billion times on TikTok.

Nolan knew that the Trinity test, the first detonation of a nuclear weapon, would have to be the showstopper for the film both visually and sonically. He even built in about 30 seconds of near-silence before the sound of the explosion hits the spectators, at three different distances.

It was a high-pressure moment for sound designer Richard King, who knows that explosions are uniquely hard to record.

“You can rarely get them to sound as impressive as you want them to sound,” he said. “I knew it should have a unique quality to it, something you’ve never heard before. It needed to be like a wall hitting you, like a cosmic door slamming.”

Knowing Nolan’s preference for practical visuals and sounds recorded during production, King challenged himself to use only those derived from the real world. Visual effects lead Andrew Jackson was similarly strict with himself to stay rooted in reality even when creating the most otherworldly effects.

And the mushroom cloud isn’t even his proudest achievement.

“The huge explosions are very effective, but for me it’s the smaller things,” Jackson said. “I loved the spinning electrons. They’re simple but effective and I think they’re really beautiful.”

The electrons show a glimpse into Oppenheimer’s mind — visions which would also provide thematic bookends in his journey. Göransson said it was only on a recent watch that he noticed how the chilling end moments of the film parallel the “Can You Hear the Music” montage from earlier with Lame’s quick cuts. But instead of “innocent dreams about adventure and science,” it’s now the end of the world. And that’s reflected in the music too.

“With a slight change in tone, you can have music that’s so uplifting and inspiring” he said. “At the end, it’s full of dread.”

LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — King Charles III paid tribute to K-pop band Blackpink on Wednesday, giving them honorary gongs for their work fighting climate change by raising awareness among young people.

During a three-day state visit by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Charles made Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim and Lalisa Manoban honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of the group's role as COP26 Advocates for the COP26 Summit in Glasgow 2021.

Roseanne Park (Rosé) was also honored, but since she has dual New Zealand citizenship, her MBE is substantive. In addition to being king of the United Kingdom, Charles is head of state for 14 realms, including New Zealand, which retained the monarch as their sovereign after gaining independence from the former British Empire.

The honors were presented Wednesday morning in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace. The awards are part of Britain’s honors system, which recognizes outstanding service to the nation and the wider world. Non-U.K. citizens, and those who aren't members of the 14 realms, receive honorary versions of the awards.

Charles had lauded the K-pop girl group on Tuesday at a glittering banquet.

“I applaud Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose, better known collectively as Blackpink, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience,” Charles said in his banquet speech. “I can only admire how they can prioritize these vital issues, as well as being global superstars.”

Coldplay concert in Malaysia can be stopped by organizers if the band misbehaves, government says

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Organizers of Wednesday's Coldplay concert in Malaysia can stop the show if the British rock band misbehaves, a minister said as the government rejected Muslim conservatives' calls to cancel the show.

Led by the country's opposition bloc, Muslim conservatives have protested the concert over Coldplay’s support for the LGBTQ+ community. Recently, they also pushed for the concert to be halted in solidarity with Palestinians killed in the Israel-Hamas war.

Communication and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he doesn't foresee any problem with Coldplay's first concert in Malaysia later in the night. Security has been beefed up for the show that is expected to draw some 75,000 people at a stadium outside Kuala Lumpur.

“Yes, it's one of the things we have discussed with the organizer,” Fahmi said when asked if a 'kill switch" to cut off power supply will be used.

“The prime minister has also said the band, you know, is very supportive of Palestine. So, we are upbeat about the concert today,” he added.

Malaysia introduced the kill switch measure recently after a controversy sparked by British band The 1975 in Kuala Lumpur in July. The band's lead singer slammed the country’s anti-gay laws and kissed a male bandmate during their performance, sparking a backlash among Muslims and prompted the government to cut short a three-day music festival.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has justified allowing the Coldplay concert, telling Parliament on Tuesday that “Coldplay is actually among the bands that support Palestine." He noted that the previous administration, before he took power in November 2022, had approved the concert. Anwar said pro-Palestinian groups also approached his office in support of the Coldplay concert.

The opposition Islamic party PAS slammed Anwar's stance. While Coldplay supports the Palestinian cause, it also encourages hedonism, said its information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.

“This is not about whether they purely support the Palestinian cause or not but the issue of hedonism culture that they bring to our community,” he said Tuesday in Parliament. PAS, which has expanded its influence following strong Muslim support in the 2022 elections, often protests concerts by international artists that it said were incompatible with Muslim values.

Officials from concert organizer Live Nation Malaysia couldn't be immediately reached for comment. It issued a statement to concert-goers a few days ago, reminding them to be “mindful of local cultures and sensitivities” and refrain from displaying props or items that may cause discomfort to others.

Police have warned the public to refrain from any sort of provocation and inciting unrest at the concert, which is part of Coldplay's Music of the Spheres World Tour.

Coldplay also met with resistance from Muslims when they performed in Indonesia earlier this month. Protesters held rallies right up to the day of its concert, slamming the band as an LGBTQ+ “propagandist” whose stance damages “faith and morals.”

Coldplay is renowned for interlacing its values with its shows, such as the band’s push for environmental sustainability. Lead singer Chris Martin has been known to wear rainbow colors and wave gay pride flags during performances.

Azinger and NBC don't renew contract. Now the question becomes who's next in the booth

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

Nothing ramps up speculation in golf like an opening in the broadcast booth.

Paul Azinger and NBC Sports failed to reach an agreement on a new contract for the lead analyst. Those close to Azinger said he had planned on working one more year, but NBC has been in a cost-cutting mode and negotiations didn't get very far.

That explains why Azinger said he was surprised and disappointed.

NBC has two golf events left this year, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas — marking the return of Tiger Woods — and the PNC Championship in Orlando, Florida, where Woods is likely to be playing with his son.

So who's next? NBC has had two lead analysts — Johnny Miller and Azinger — since 1990.

Justin Leonard had been working for NBC until he returned to playing on the PGA Tour Champions this year. Reached at home Monday night, Leonard had no insight on NBC's plans and said only, “I'm enjoying my playing gig.”

David Duval also played extensively on the PGA Tour Champions after his work at NBC Golf Channel where he delivered cerebral commentary. He was at a resort not far from Denver with his wife and didn't know Azinger wasn't returning until a day after the announcement.

“Would I listen? Of course,” Duval said Monday night when asked if he had interest. “But no one has reached out.”

Otherwise, names are being kicked around from Brad Faxon to Brandel Chamblee, whose work has been exclusively on shows before and after tournament rounds. Former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, one of golf's most insightful players, and former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley of Ireland also come to mind.

NBC also recently let go of Brandt Packer, a producer for 11 years with versality of working PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, college and other prominent amateur events.

“It was not my decision,” Packer said. “I would have loved to be back with them.”

NBC has not commented on its cuts except to thank Azinger for his work and wish him well.

The Ryder Cup celebration didn’t end in Rome, at least not for Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy.

In the second part of an interview with The Irish Independent, they talk about their flight home to South Florida and then McIlroy inviting Lowry over for lunch the next day. A bottle of wine was opened. And then another. And lunch turned into dinner.

Captain Luke Donald soon joined them, as did Michael Jordan.

“Rory and Luke started texting him, and the next thing we’re sitting there drinking with Michael Jordan, just the four of us,” Lowry said. “He’s very much a pro-USA guy. I think it was the first Ryder Cup he hadn’t been to in 25 years, so we gave him a good slagging.”

McIlroy said Jordan stayed from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Among the topics: Pay for play, of course.

“He told a story about the U.S. basketball team, the Dream Team at the Olympics in ’92. ‘Do you not think I could have got paid to play in the Olympics?’” he said. ”‘These people are missing the point of what it means.’

“He saw the long-term value of winning an Olympics, and said he ended up doing way better than if he had taken money there and then.”

McIlroy said Lowry desperately wanted a photo of the group, but as a fellow sporting figure, “He doesn’t need that.”

“But ... myself, Rory, Luke and MJ sitting around talking about the Ryder Cup,” Lowry said. “Not really how I envisioned the celebrations.”

Rose Zhang turned pro and hit the ground running. And running.

She won in her pro debut at the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National. She had top 10s in three majors. And then she cooled significantly, going seven straight tournaments without a top 10. She played 16 times, including the Solheim Cup in Spain.

And now it’s time for a break, which means she likely will be grinding more than ever.

She’s going back to school.

Zhang is determined to finish her degree at Stanford, which is on a quarter system. She plans to take 22 units in the January-March quarter, meaning she won’t play but a few LPGA events, if any.

“It’ll be a good time for me to be grinding somewhere else apart from the golf course,” Zhang said. “So I’ll be kind of taking that time to go back and study in person. And we have the Asia swing, Florida swing, so it’s to be determined on whether or not I’m playing those yet.”

The LPGA has two Florida events in January, a three-week Asia swing that ends March 10 and then three tournaments in California, Arizona and Las Vegas. The first major, the Chevron Championship, is April 18-21.

“I am 55% done with my graduation, which means I’m going to have to be working a little harder in the next couple years if I want to simultaneously play golf and study,” she said.

Dylan Frittelli finished at No. 173 in the FedEx Cup and was the first player to be listed in a European tour field under “Category 12.” That's for PGA Tour players who finished between No. 126 and No. 200 in the FedEx Cup.

Frittelli is playing the Joburg Open in his native South Africa. No one is playing under that category in the other European tour event this week at the Australian PGA, and it remains unclear how many such players will take advantage of the new option.

The category only allows five players in an event.

They have until Wednesday to decide if they want to take the offer for the remaining three European tour events this year (two in South Africa, one in Mauritius), and until Dec. 20 to decide if they want to play events early in 2024 schedule.

Meanwhile, the leading 10 players (not already PGA Tour members) from the final Race to Dubai get PGA Tour cards for 2024, a list led by Adrian Meronk of Poland. They have until Dec. 1 to decide whether to accept membership, although the PGA Tour has been told all 10 are expected to take cards.

The others are Ryan Fox, Victor Perez, Thorbjorn Olesen, Alexander Bjork, Sami Valimaki, Robert MacIntyre, Matthieu Pavon, Jorge Campillo and Ryo Hisatsune.

Atthaya Thitikul won the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average (69.53) on the LPGA this year. She is the second Thai to win the award, joining Ariya Jutanugarn in 2018. ... Luke List won $300,000 through RSM’s “Birdies Fore Love” competition for recording the most birdies (or better) over the seven events of the 2023 FedEx Cup Fall. The money will be donated to List’s choice of a children- and/or family-focused charitable organization ... Ludvig Aberg shot 65 or lower 12 times since his pro debut in the Canadian Open, the most of any player during that stretch. ... The PGA of America and Sky Sports extended their broadcast partnership for three years for live coverage in Britain and Ireland of the PGA Championship and Senior PGA Championship.

Five years ago, Ariya Jutanugarn was the only LPGA player to surpass $2 million for the season. This year, Lilia Vu led three players at $3 million or more, and four others surpassed the $2 million mark.

“My fondest memory afterwards was the bus ride. We started singing some of the songs the fans had been singing and everyone was involved, players, caddies and wives, and it was so much fun. We could have stayed on that bus all night.” — Rory McIlroy to The Irish Independent on the bus ride to the hotel after winning the Ryder Cup.

- nhk.or.jp

- nhk.or.jp

Hong Kong's Disneyland opens 1st Frozen-themed attraction, part of a $60B global expansion

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong Disneyland opened its first Frozen-themed attraction on Monday, with thousands of eager visitors turning up to experience the new rides, some lining up for hours to get an early start.

Based on Disney’s wildly popular Frozen animation film, the new section of the park features landscapes and characters from the movie and two new rides, a roller coaster and a boat ride that takes visitors through different scenes featured in the film.

“Over the past decade, the film has grown into one of the most successful franchises in Disney history,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences. “World of Frozen represents Hong Kong Disneyland’s largest and boldest expansion since the park opened in 2005.”

The opening comes after Disney announced in September a $60 billion expansion of its parks and cruises over about a decade. Now that Chinese tourists are venturing abroad again after the pandemic, the pandemic, the new attraction is meant to be a game changer for a theme park that has run losses for years.

Some of the hundreds of Disney fans who lined up hours ahead of time were dressed like characters from Frozen.

Disney enthusiast Bryan Darmanic, who had travelled from California with his wife and daughter, were among the first visitors to the Frozen-themed roller coaster and received limited edition souvenirs to commemorate the experience.

“The World of Frozen is really well-designed and beautiful,” said Darmanic, whose family was making its first visit to the Hong Kong theme park.

Winnie Ip, a tourist from Macao, said she arrived at 9 a.m. in the morning ahead of the opening of the Frozen section.

The Frozen attractions were “magnificent,” Ip said.

Hong Kong has been beefing up the park to try and draw more visitors. In June 2022, it debuted its Momentous multimedia and fireworks show, which is staged at its castle on most nights.

Elsewhere, Disney plans to launch a Zootopia-themed area at its Shanghai Disneyland in December, a Fantasy Springs port at Tokyo DisneySea next spring and a Frozen-themed Kingdom of Arendelle at Disneyland Paris, slated to open in either 2024 or 2025.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador -- Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios won the Miss Universe competition late Saturday night in El Salvador, the first to wear the crown from her country.

Palacios is a 23-year-old communicologist, who said she wants to work to promote mental health after suffering debilitating bouts of anxiety herself.

Miss Thailand, Anntonia Porsild, was first runner-up and Miss Australia, Moraya Wilson, the second runner-up.

Eighty-four women competed for the crown in the 72nd edition of the competition.

Palacios appeared to secure the win when she confidently answered the question of which woman's shoes would she like to spend a year in by saying Mary Wollstonecraft, the 18th-century English writer and philosopher. Wollstonecraft was an advocate of women’s rights and is considered one of the forerunners of feminism.

Palacios said she wants to work to close the salary gap between the genders so that women can work in any area.

Miss Universe was last held in El Salvador in 1975. This year's event was another opportunity for President Nayib Bukele to tout changes made under his administration, especially greatly improving the country's safety.

“El Salvador has changed for good and we have shown it again,” Bukele said Saturday night. “Miss Universe has given us the opportunity to show the world what we are capable of. Thank you for choosing to be part of El Salvador’s rebirth.”

Bukele is running for reelection despite constitutional term limits and is widely popular for his crackdown on the country’s gangs. But he has faced international criticism for eroding checks and balances on his power and not respecting human rights.

More than 72,000 people have been arrested without due process since a state of emergency was declared in March 2022 in response to a surge in gang violence. The special powers it granted Bukele remain in place.
