Chloe's new designer Chemena Kamali puts on a 1970s-tinged debut at Paris Fashion Week

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

PARIS -- Chloe revisited its vibrant 1970s essence, infused with late Karl Lagerfeld’s indelible influence, while propelling the brand into a new era for the debut show of its new designer Chemena Kamali on Thursday at Paris Fashion Week.

Despite Lagerfeld’s lasting presence in the brand aesthetic, Kamali is the latest in a swathe of female designers — such as Gabriela Hearst, Clare Waight Keller, and Phoebe Philo — at the helm of the storied Maison. This is apt for a house credited with inventing ready-to-wear in the post-war period that liberated women from the constraints of formality.

Here are some highlights of Thursday’s fall-winter 2024 shows:

Going back to its storied roots — or close enough — Kamali challenged the brand’s 70s heyday and, in the process, pulled in the great and good of the fashion world for her debut. It was one of the hottest tickets at Paris Fashion Week.

The morning show was a who’s who of fashion dynasties — harking back to the past and looking to the future. Pat Cleveland, the iconic model — and one of the first women of color anywhere to attain success on the runway, in the 1960s and 1970s — entered to a flurry of camera snaps with her model daughter, Anna Cleveland.

The fashion dynasty was followed shortly by Jerry Hall and Georgia May Jagger, the model daughter of Hall and Mick Jagger. They nestled into their cushioned seats near Mikhaela Aghion, the granddaughter of Chloe’s founder, Gaby Aghion.

Kamali, a 42-year-old designer from Düsseldorf who rose the ranks inside the house, said a “sense of nostalgia” and “something that triggers a memory” is at the heart of the brand — seen not just in the stars who attended but also the clothes that had one foot in the past and the other in the future.

For fall, diaphanous tiers of 1970s flounce in almost angelically light hues defined the show’s aesthetic inside a brutalist warehouse space. The gorged-out concrete and visibly rough plaster gently contrasted the femininity inherent in the designs.

The solid collection had plenty of moments of whimsy. Exaggeratedly floaty dresses were sometimes chicly tucked into giant sheeny thigh-high leather pirate boots adding unexpected styling contrasts.

So, too, did the occasional sheen of gold-metal Chloe belts, golden grape neck clasps, or the occasional giant brown leather handbag almost as big as the model holding it. Layering, statement fur, and pirate-style tights also put the style dial firmly in the late 1970s.

Kamali said she aimed to honor the brand’s heritage of liberation and innovation.

“Gaby (Aghion) wanted to liberate women from the stiffness of couture (in the 1950s) … She was one of the first to actually do ready-to-wear because she wanted women to be able to move and go to work,” Kamali explained, connecting the brand’s inception to its ongoing mission.

Reflecting on the transformative “Karl Era,” Kamali emphasized Chloe’s unique position at the intersection of nostalgia and progress.

“In the late ’70s ... (Lagerfeld) was someone who could look into the past and into the future simultaneously,” she said.

This sentiment, Kamali remarked, is at Chloe’s core, blending “this sense of nostalgia” with the fresh, paving the way for a collection that respects its rich past while boldly stepping into the future.

In a touching moment capturing that same vibe, Kamali dedicated the show to her father, who recently passed away. Her young son then jumped up unscripted into her arms from the audience as she stepped forward to the applause.

GIVENCHY’S DESIGNER-LESS DISPLAY SPARKLES AT PARIS FASHION WEEK

One more installment of Paris Fashion Week brought another designer-less Givenchy display to the (albeit sublimely chic) Avenue George V atelier. While the LVMH-owned brand’s decor was minimal – a pared-down affair across the bare wooden Point d’Hongrie parquet – it compensated with buzz as well-wishers crowded the famous Parisian avenue, and VIP guests were lavished with champagne.

The Givenchy studio took the reins for ready-to-wear again, unveiling designs brimming with flair and inventiveness. The collection opened with a mini dress featuring a scratched metallic-like surface texture, a contemporary contrast to its long, classical train. Stiff swirling neck-scarves introduced a major banding theme, echoing in rigid band panels adorning the bust of a signature house little black dress in a notable fashion-forward gesture. Oversized statement fur coats added on-trend glamour, alongside a loose A-line woolen coat with an off-kilter back and an array of gleaming gold and bejeweled earrings. Yet, amidst the acclaim, a faint murmur among attendees suggested a lack of a cohesive, creative backbone. Could this stem from the knowledge the storied house was navigating here without its captain, following Matthew Williams’ departure announced in December last year? The hope remains that this great Parisian Maison will soon find Williams’ successor.

RICK OWENS’ OTHERWORLDLY EDGE IN PORTERVILLE COLLECTION

The latest showcase from American fashion maestro Rick Owens was an avant-garde exploration of anthropomorphism, presenting a universe where human and alien blurred. Owens’ ready-to-wear collection, dubbed Porterville after the California town of his youth—a place he has described as desolate—served as a namesake and muse for this season. Emblazoned logos on tops pay homage to Owens’ roots and catapulted the audience into a display of bleak displacement and surreal, unhuman references.

Models emerged as if stepping out of the future, their silhouettes dramatically elongated by boots reminiscent of insect limbs or exaggerated horse hooves, and heads crowned with caps that merged the equestrian with the cosmic explorer. Silver balled pendants further defined the collection’s unique edge with an ancient and futuristic aura.

Owens’ signature embrace of volume came in the airbag-like body wrappings, while High Priestess-style spiked shoulders on duvet jackets and the primal fierceness of fluffed jumpsuits and capes conveyed a sense of protection.

Oscar winner John Williams among 19 new members of American Academy of Arts and Letters

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

NEW YORK -- After composing some of the most famous soundtracks in history, and winning multiple Academy Awards, John Williams has been welcomed into a more rarefied institution: the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The academy announced Thursday that Williams was among 19 inductees voted into the honorary society for musicians, authors, artists and architects that was founded in 1898, with members over time ranging from Mark Twain and Toni Morrison to Leonard Bernstein and Alice Neel. Others elected this year include another prominent film composer, Terence Blanchard, the Grammy-winning jazz musician who has provided scores for many Spike Lee films, prize-winning novelist Alice McDermott and the multimedia artist Matthew Barney.

“Every year I am both astonished and delighted to see the list of amazing new members of the Academy; and it’s especially exciting to see the range of the arts and letters represented," Kwame Anthony Appiah, the academy's president, said in a statement.

The 92-year-old Williams is known for such films as “Jaws,” “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” But he also has had a career outside of movies that is more in line with academy tradition. He conducted the Boston Pops for more than a decade, composed symphonies and chamber music, and wrote concertos for bassoon, flute and violin and trumpet, along with a cello concerto for Yo-Yo Ma.

Current members vote new ones into the academy, which has a core membership of 300 and honorary categories for U.S. and foreign artists, among them Meryl Streep and Bob Dylan. Singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash was an honorary pick this year, along with Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk, the Polish novelist, German conceptual artist Rosemarie Trockel and the Irish architect John Tuomey.

In an email to The Associated Press, Cash wrote, “I have a list of people in my head who deserve this tremendous honor more than I do, but I will put that list aside and say that I’m completely overwhelmed, overjoyed, and humbled to join the distinguished community of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.”

McDermott, whose novels include "Charming Billy" and “The Ninth Hour,” was at home, writing, when she received an email from the academy telling her that she had been elected.

“My astonishment to find myself in such august company was quickly followed by the realization that I’ve got more work to do to keep up,” she told the AP. “A nice, and slightly intimidating, sense of both achievement and challenge.”

Besides McDermott, the academy voted fiction writer-essayist Charles Baxter and author-critic Margo Jefferson into its literature department. Jazz instrumentalist-composer-educators Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton, Grammy-winning classical composer Libby Larsen and the eclectic composer-instrumentalist Steven Mackey were elected for music, along with Williams and Blanchard.

In architecture, new members are the light artist and designer James Carpenter, Mack Scogin, who with Merrill Elam heads an Atlanta-based firm and Sharon Egretta Sutton, the architect, author and educator who in 1984 became the first Black woman to teach in an accredited architectural degree program, at the University of Michigan.

This year's class for visual art, besides Barney, includes June Leaf, known for her abstract paintings and drawings, multimedia artist Simone Leigh, painter Laura Owens, sculptor Charles Ray, visual artist-curator Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and painter-sculptor Henry Taylor.

Memberships are lifetime and openings occur after a member dies. The new inductees will be honored during a ceremony in May at the academy's complex in Upper Manhattan, where the traditional keynote speech — the Blashfield Address — will be given by political scientist and Harvard University professor Danielle Allen. Her books include the award-winning “Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality.”

Looking for a leap year lift? Check out this silly French newspaper that only publishes on Feb. 29

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

PARIS -- Read all about it, right now — or you'll have to wait another four years. Satirical French newspaper La Bougie du Sapeur only comes out on Feb. 29.

It's a leap year-only publication, filled with cringe-worthy puns and commentary on events of the past four years.

The 2024 edition includes an article suggesting France doesn’t need schools anymore thanks to artificial intelligence. Another floats the idea of dismantling the Eiffel Tower during the Paris Olympics to reduce security risks -- and having IKEA produce a manual for rebuilding it.

Some friends started the newspaper as a joke in 1980, naming it after a comic book figure who was born on Feb. 29. The last edition — in 2020, as the world went into COVID-19 lockdowns — sold 120,000 copies. Revenue from newsstand sales goes mainly to a charity for people with disabilities.

Its editors are proudly politically incorrect, and some articles seem rather, well, dated. But that's the point. That, and lifting the mood a bit.

When the world goes out of whack, reads its once-in-four-years editorial, ‘’Sometimes you have to laugh about it.’’

Dave Myers, TV chef known as one half of the "Hairy Bikers" duo, has died at 66

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

LONDON -- Dave Myers, best known as one half of Britain's adored “Hairy Bikers” TV chef duo, has died after a battle with cancer, his co-star and long-time friend Si King said Thursday. He was 66.

Myers and King found fame in the U.K. and beyond with their “Hairy Bikers” TV series, an unlikely combination of motorbike travel show, humor and cookery program. The formula proved hugely successful and the bearded duo has published more than 25 cookbooks.

Myers first announced he was receiving treatment for cancer in 2022. He didn't provide details about his diagnosis.

King said in a post on social media that Myers died peacefully at home Wednesday.

“I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow,” King said. “I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world."

Myers was working as a make-up artist specializing in prosthetics when he first met King on the set of a BBC television drama in 1995.

The pair first appeared together in “The Hairy Bikers' Cookbook” on the BBC in 2004. The show features them riding around countries including Portugal and Namibia, sampling local dishes and having a go at cooking them themselves.

They went on to film many more series in numerous locations around the world, from Vietnam to Argentina to cities along Route 66 in the United States. Myers and King also documented their weight loss in “Hairy Dieters: How To Love Food And Lose Weight" and shared health tips and recipes with their diet club.

Following his cancer diagnosis, Myers briefly took a break from work before filming his last show with King, “The Hairy Bikers Go West.” The show, which is currently airing, sees them travel down Britain's west coast from Scotland to Devon.

Myers was married to Liliana Orzac and was stepfather to her two children, Iza and Sergiu.

Amsterdam police say a suspect in the fatal shooting of a Dutch rapper has been arrested in Paris

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- A suspect in the fatal shooting of a Dutch rapper was arrested on a European warrant at an airport in Paris early Wednesday, Amsterdam police said.

The 20-year-old man, whose identity wasn't released, was detained at Charles de Gaulle airport as he was about to board a flight from Paris to French Guiana in South America, police said in a statement.

Detectives believe he fatally shot 26-year-old Danzel Silos, better known as rapper Bigidagoe, in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Dutch capital.

“The suspect is in detention and will be transferred to judicial officials in Amsterdam. Silos' family has been informed of the arrest in Paris,” police said in a statement.

A major investigation team set up after the slaying is looking into “the background of a possible conflict between rap groups,” the statement added.

Overnight, explosions damaged homes at three locations in north and southeast Amsterdam and the word “war” was spray-painted on walls. Police said they were investigating possible links to Silos' death.

Judge rules Prince Harry was not unfairly stripped of UK security detail after he moved to the US

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

LONDON -- LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry was not improperly stripped of his publicly funded security detail during visits to Britain after he gave up his status as a working member of the royal family and moved to the U.S., a London judge ruled Wednesday.

Justice Peter Lane said in the High Court that the decision to provide security to Harry on a case-by-case basis was not unlawful, irrational or unjustified.

The Duke of Sussex claimed he and his family were endangered when visiting the U.K. because of hostility toward him and his wife on social media and relentless hounding by news media.

His lawyer argued that the government group that evaluated Harry’s security needs acted irrationally and failed to follow its own policies that should have required a risk analysis of the duke’s safety.

A government lawyer said Harry had been treated fairly and was still provided protection on some visits, citing a security detail that guarded him in June 2021 when he was chased by photographers after attending an event with seriously ill children at Kew Gardens in west London.

The committee that made the decision to reject his security request considered the wider impact that the “tragic death” of his mother, the late Princess Diana, had on the nation, and in making its decision gave greater weight to the “likely significant public upset were a successful attack” on her son to happen, attorney James Eadie said.

Harry, 39, the younger son of King Charles III, has broken ranks with royal family tradition in his willingness to go to court to challenge both the government and take on tabloids in his effort to hold publishers accountable for hounding him throughout his life.

The lawsuit was one of six cases Harry has brought in the High Court. Three were related to his security arrangements and three have been against tabloid publishers for allegedly hacking phones and using private investigators to snoop on his life for news stories.

In his first case to go to trial, Harry won a big victory last year against the publisher of the Daily Mirror over phone hacking allegations, winning a judgment in court and ultimately settling remaining allegations that were due to go to trial. While the settlement was undisclosed, he was to be reimbursed for all his legal fees and was due to receive an interim payment of 400,000 pounds ($505,000).

He recently withdrew a libel case against the Daily Mail over an article that said he tried to hide his efforts to continue receiving government-funded security. Harry dropped the case after a judge ruled he was more likely to lose at trial because the publisher could show that statements issued on his behalf were misleading and that the February 2022 article reflected an “honest opinion” and wasn’t libelous.

Harry failed to persuade a different judge last year that he should be able to privately pay for London’s police force to guard him when he comes to town. A judge denied that offer after a government lawyer argued that officers shouldn’t be used as “private bodyguards for the wealthy.”

Kensington Palace says Britain’s Prince William has pulled out of attending a memorial service for his godfather, the late King Constantine of Greece, because of a personal matter

LONDON -- Kensington Palace says Britain's Prince William has pulled out of attending a memorial service for his godfather, the late King Constantine of Greece, because of a personal matter.

The palace declined to elaborate on Tuesday but said his wife, the Princess of Wales, who is recovering from abdominal surgery, continues to do well.

It said William called the Greek royal family, which is attending the memorial service in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, to let them know he was unable to attend. Constantine II of Greece died in January of last year at the age of 82.

King Charles III, who is being treated for an undisclosed form of cancer, also will not attend the service for his cousin. The monarch has canceled all his public engagements while he receives treatment.

BiS

BiS

Hisashi Oki dYdX Foundation Japan Lead

'One Love' receives more love at the box office, claiming No. 1 spot for second straight week

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

LOS ANGELES -- For a second straight week, biopic “ Bob Marley: One Love ” continues to exceed expectations by claiming the No. 1 spot at the box office, overcoming two debut films and Sony's “Madame Web” that's still producing subpar numbers.

The Paramount film starring Kingsley Ben-Adir pulled in $13.5 million during its second week of release. The project, which was produced for about $70 million, already eclipsed that mark, grossing nearly $72 million domestically in North America.

It's an impressive achievement for the Reinaldo Marcus Green-directed Marley's musical biopic that's focused on the Rastafarian legend's story during the making of his 1977 album “Exodus" while leading up to his impactful concert in his native Jamaica.

"Some of his greatest hits came out nearly 50 years ago, but his music still resonates through this film,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore.

“One Love” drew nearly $2 million more than “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training” which placed No. 2. The latest installment in the Japanese anime series from Crunchyroll and Sony debuted with $11.7 million.

“Demon Slayer” scored the impressive opening number from only 1,949 locations — far less than “One Love” with 3,597 and 3,020 for “ Ordinary Angels " — a faith-based Lionsgate film starring Hilary Swank that placed third at the box office with an estimated $6.5 million.

“There might not be any huge blockbuster films recently, but there some real gems out there for moviegoers to see,” Dergarabedian said.

All three of those films outperformed better than “ Madame Web," which has struggled to find its footing after the superhero movie flopped last week. It was thought the Spider-Man spinoff would draw strong numbers — especially with Dakota Johnson starring as the film's lead Marvel character.

But so far, it hasn't lived up to the hype, producing just $6 million in its second week and grossing a little more than a disappointing $35 million.

After its 10th weekend, Universal's animated “ Migration ” rounded out the top five with $3 million, bringing its domestic total to $120 million. “ Argylle ” placed sixth with $2.8 million barely outpacing “ Wonka," which reeled in $2.5 million. Paul King’s musical starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka has grossed more than $214 million after 11 weeks.

The Ethan Coen-directed “ Drive Away Dolls ” debuted eighth with $2.4 million ahead of “ The Beekeeper ” and “The Chosen” season four, a Christian series focused on Jesus Christ.

Dergarabedian called this past week a slow one. But next week, he expects it'll pick up greatly with the highly anticipated “ Dune: Part Two ” making its long-waited debut, which should end the top spot reign by “One Love.”

“It's the calm before the sandstorm,” he said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “Bob Marley: One Love,” $13.5 million.

2. ““Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba - To the Hashira Training,” $11.5 million.

3. "Ordinary Angels," $6.5 million.

4. “Madame Web,” $6 million.

5. “Migration,” $3 million.

6. “Argylle,” $2.8 million.

7. “Wonka,” $2.5 million.

8. “Drive-Away Dolls,” $2.4 million.

9. “The Beekeeper,” $1.9 million.

10. “The Chosen,” Episodes 4-6, $1.7 million.

Armani offers hope for a better season with winter flowers as he closes Milan Fashion Week

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

MILAN -- Giorgio Armani’s collection for the next cold weather season, previewed on the last day of Milan Fashion Week on Sunday, embraces the designer's love of nature and admiration of Asian cultures expressed in his trademark flowing and flattering tailoring.

Think garden party for the daytime looks, with pretty embroidered shoes and hats complementing ensembles of unstructured jackets and textured trousers accented by obi belts.

A dragonfly motif landed on a field of flowers in one dark velvet look, and a couture-worthy jacket was constructed out of three-dimensional organza flowers. Evening wear glittered like so many fireflies.

Armani said he chose winter flowers as a motif as an expression of resistance and contrast — and because everyone loves a flower.

“I believe that all of you would love to have a black jacket with embroidered colored flowers that … announces a better season,” Armani told journalists after the show.

Armani, who turns 90 this summer, said he finds the job as challenging as he did when he launched more than four decades ago, acknowledging the quest to satisfy his own expectations is exhausting. He said he worked for eight months on one floral element.

“This work is tiring, and I am still not happy,’’ the designer said. “If you come to the next show, I will have changed something.”

Front-row guests at the second show, benefitting from Armani’s own fine-tuning, included Cate Blanchett, a frequent house guest, Italian rocker Victoria De Angelis, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, director Sam Taylor-Johnson and French actor Louis Garrel.

Armani for years has anchored the last day of fashion week, with most editors abandoning Milan for Paris, the next fashion week stop.

Armani said he had written to the Italian fashion council to extend Milan Fashion Week by a day to improve the flow.

This week of previews has been plagued by far-flung shows, forcing the fashion fleet of sedans and shuttles to traverse the city multiple times, complicated by anti-war demonstrations, a transport strike and rain that snarled traffic, which led to delays in the schedule of over an hour.

Inside the SAG Awards: A mostly celebratory mood for 1st show since historic strike

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

LOS ANGELES -- Inside the ballroom at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, “Oppenheimer” was front and center literally and figuratively, snagging the night’s top prize along with trophies for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.

Ahead of this year’s Academy Awards, Christopher Nolan’s summer blockbuster increasingly looks like the run-away favorite. It was outshined on Saturday’s awards only by reflections on the longest SAG-AFTRA strike in history last year and subsequent deal reached that ended it in November.

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland gave the room a kind of pep talk before Saturday's show began, accompanied by a montage of actors speaking from the picket lines over the summer, prompting the room to erupt in cheers of support.

“We did achieve, I think, really important advances on paying actors fairly for working on streaming,” Crabtree-Ireland said of the show being shown live on Netflix. “We’re really one of the only shows out there that’s delivering a union message and talking about how workers can support each other. So, I’m proud that Netflix is having us on their platform.”

That speech, however, wasn't part of Netflix's livestream.

There was indeed a general sense of solidarity and gratitude toward their union from many in attendance, though some had less optimistic perspectives.

“I’m seeing a lot of people who are super grateful to be able to get back to work. But I’m also seeing the industry shrink a little bit and I’m starting to see jobs go away,” filmmaker and actor Mark Duplass said before the show. “It’s not an easy time. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it.”

But most of the night was characterized by levity and camaraderie. The ballroom seemed energized by a presenter bit involving Billie Eilish signing Melissa McCarthy's face (at the comedian's request) before handing an award to “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri.

The inside of any Hollywood awards show is a strange, starry place. Actors are typically seated at tables with their producers, directors and co-stars from the nominated film or series.

People are encouraged to remain seated, apart from designated periods throughout the show, when the room breaks out into a frenzy as celebrities rush to find friends or fellow stars they profess to be fans of, trying to get in conversations before the three-minute window closes. (Netflix's broadcast had no commercial breaks, but did build in time for impromptu schmoozing.)

Early in the night, Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone found their way to one another and were soon joined by Carey Mulligan, who ran to an empty seat between the pair and embraced Stone. (Hathaway — along with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt — combined for an early highlight of the show, gathering onstage for a highly anticipated reunion of “The Devil Wears Prada” castmates.)

At a nearby table, director Alexander Payne poured a glass of Champagne for “The Holdovers” star Dominic Sessa, who turned 21 in October, while “American Fiction” actor Jon Ortiz was temporarily stuck outside the show after picking up two drinks for his table.

“Miss!” exclaimed Brendan Fraser across a sea of people as he sought the attention of a waiter before giving her cash pulled from his pocket. “This is for you.”

While many of the main award categories heading into the Oscars seem to be all but a sure thing, a few are still up in the air, one of them being best actress.

Although Stone has collected several accolades this season, Lily Gladstone took home the best film performance by a female actor award for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

As Gladstone rushed back to her table following her emotional speech, she was embraced by her co-stars as they wiped away tears. Not long after, “The Crown” star Elizabeth Debicki, who won an award earlier in the night, rushed to Gladstone asking for a photo.

MILAN FASHION PHOTOS: Ferragamo, Dolce&Gabbana conceal and reveal, balance transparency with cover

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

MILAN -- While the fashion industry discusses size diversity from time to time, there was little evidence of real evolution on the Milan runway this season.

On Saturday, Paloma Elsasser walked Ferragamo in a satin plunge-neck cocktail dress, and Dolce&Gabbana included models of normal size. But the thinness of some models was a topic of pre-show chatter.

Ashley Graham, who sat in the front row of Dolce&Gabbana, as recently as the September shows, lamented how often she is the only larger model on runways.

Some highlights from the fourth day of Milan Fashion Week, mostly womenswear previews for fall-winter 2024-25.

Maximilian Davis’ Ferragamo collection both conceals and reveals, with oversized masculine woolen overcoats covering wispy, transparent embroidered dresses. It is the freedom to choose who sees what.

The designer, in his third winter seasons at the Florence-based family-run fashion house, took inspiration from the 1920s Prohibition era, when a U.S. booze ban drove revelers underground.

“People were using clothing as a way to kind of hide what they were doing, as a massive celebration of freedom,” Davis said backstage. “They were going to speakeasies and they didn’t want (anyone) to be seeing what they were wearing.’’

Wool coats have broad shoulders and masculine silhouettes in the style of Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo. Underneath, dresses of scalloped sequins and draped fringe recall flapper looks with contemporary discipline. Looks without pants were paired with woolen tights for full-cover, while hip boots rose the hemline of knit mini-dresses. Footwear included heels fully concealed beneath a flurry of feathers.

Davis covered men head to toe in leather, from thigh-high fishermen boots to gloves, or freed them to reveal a leg in flat-pocket shorts with thick cropped knitwear.

“People need to let go, and just be free,” he said, as Ferragamo declared “an era of emancipation.”

Eva Mendes and Ashley Graham sizzled in the Dolce & Gabbana front row — the actor wrapped in a leopard coat over leather, neckline glistening with a lariat necklace to matching dangly earrings, and the model mirroring the tuxedo runway with a white tuxedo jacket and black trousers.

On the runway, the collection oozed sexiness, as designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana combined tuxedo tailoring with their lingerie mastery for looks that were more, or less, revealing, with an array of garments to adjust the temperature up or down.

Cropped tuxedo jackets revealed lacy bras, while sheer sarong skirts tied in a satin bow showed off lace panties. Looks finished mostly with stiletto heels and felt berets with netting. More modestly, full tuxedos were formfitting with cigarette trouser or short shorts and cropped jackets that allowed peek-a-boo moments. The collection was rigorously black, with a few liquid gold and silver moments.

Naomi Campbell closed the show in a layered lace bras, front-slit sarong and fetish leather gloves, giving a slight wiggle as she exited the runway to the delight of the fashion crowd.

Ukraine's most famous sculptor turns war debris into art, expressing the inexpressible

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

PARIS -- From within the debris of Russia’s war, Ukraine’s most famous sculptor was compelled to make a dark artistic pivot the day his own country house was ravaged by a Russian strike.

“It happened by accident, it happened when a missile came into our house, our dacha … and my neighbors gathered the debris from the missile,” Mikhail Reva said, via a translator. “And the idea came to my mind to make a metaphor of those debris.”

Two years into the invasion, the Odesa-native has not rested in transforming over two tons of war debris — spiked Kalashnikov cartridges, bullets and arresting crumpled shells — into art that expresses his homeland’s suffering. The often monumental sculptures serve as challenging and emotional reminders of the vital role of art to express the inexpressible.

The wrought iron works, some with delicate wings, others religious and ironic, are on display in the U.S. Embassy’s storied Hotel de Talleyrand in Paris, as part of an initiative by the United States to reengage with the Paris-based U.N. cultural agency, UNESCO, which it rejoined last year after a years-long hiatus. It’s also an effort to highlight important voices in the war which has seen a loss of life on an unimaginable scale.

“In any long war you can get complacent, and art has the power to transcend, to make you stop and make you remember it’s about individuals,” said Jean Elizabeth Manes, the recently appointed U.S. Ambassador to UNESCO. “It has the ability to make you see it again, see it with fresh eyes.”

Compelled to transform the incomprehensible destruction into something meaningful, Reva created 2023’s “The Flower of Death,” utilizing rocket fragments from the actual strike on his house.

“As an artist, it was quite challenging for me when I learned about the attack on the dacha to understand how I can translate the pain in my artistic method. It was the big question,” he said.

Reva was famous long before his art took a darker turn. His famously ludic sculptures have been seen by millions and in prominent squares and beaches in Odesa, Kyiv and beyond. However, the relentless conflict has compelled his artwork to narrate a more sinister tale — one of endurance and remembrance amid the atrocities of the conflict.

“The Memory of the Crucified,” stands out in the collection, its form a cross composed of nails recovered from churches obliterated by Russian attacks. This piece, along with “Aggressor,” a boldly sexualized sculpture featuring a missile provocatively positioned, captures the profound essence of defiance against aggression.

Meanwhile, a gargantuan Russian doll, subtitled “From Russia With Love” and adorned with 1,000 bullet cartridges as spikes, embodies the irony of violence.

"I see (the materials) as something that humanity has created to take somebody’s life ... I wanted to show that I can make something beautiful from something that was made to kill," he added.

Reva, with a touch of irony, noted, “All of these pieces are from Russia with love.”

French actors denounce abuse by directors when they were teenagers in new #MeToo step

Repost News asikjost.blogspot.com

PARIS -- As French cinema basks in Academy Awards attention, actors who allege they were teenage victims of sexual and physical abuse by directors decades older than them are shining the light on the repulsive underside of the country's industry.

The latest step in the #MeToo movement could come at the French cinema awards on Friday.

French media are reporting that Judith Godrèche is to make a speech on sexual violence at the Cesar Awards ceremony, France's version of the Oscars, which is broadcast live on television.

Godrèche already sent a powerful message to the public through recent interviews in which she denounced an “omerta” in the industry.

It comes as French cinema is expected to shine next month at the Oscars ceremony with Justine Triet 's courtroom drama “ Anatomy of a Fall.”

Godrèche, 51, is well-known to French cinemagoers. She recently accused two film directors of rape and sexual abuse when she was a teenager. She formally filed a complaint earlier this month, the Paris prosecutor said.

She is accusing film director Benoît Jacquot, with whom she had a six-year relationship which started when she was 14, of rape and physical abuse. Jacquot, a prominent director in France, is 25 years her senior.

She is also accusing another film director, Jacques Doillon, of sexual abuse while he was directing a film when she was 15. Doillon is 28 years older than her.

Both Jacquot and Doillon have denied the allegations.

Speaking on France Inter radio earlier this month, Godrèche said she was never attracted to Jacquot, “but I ended up with him, in his bed, and I was his child wife.” Godrèche and Jacquot met in 1986 on the set of his film “The Beggars.”

“I was indoctrinated, it was as if I’d joined a cult,” she said. The relationship was marred by violence, confinement and control, she said.

Godrèche had previously spoken about her relationship with Jacquot, without naming him, in an autobiographical TV show called “Icon of French Cinema” that was released in December.

She was among the actors who spoke out in 2017 against U.S. film producer Harvey Weinstein amid the #MeToo movement, accusing him of sexual assault when she was 24.

Jacquot told Le Monde newspaper that he “doesn’t feel directly concerned” by Godrèche's accusations, with whom he said he fell in love at the time. He denied any abuse of authority.

In a statement to international news agency Agence France-Presse, Doillon said “the just cause doesn’t justify arbitrary denunciations, false accusations and lies.”

Following Godrèche's accusations, other women decided to speak out.

Isild Le Besco, 41, accused Jacquot of “psychological and physical violence” in a relationship with him that began when she was 16 and he was 52. She also accused Doillon of having picked someone else for a role she was supposed to get because she refused his sexual advances.

Another actors, Anna Mouglalis, 45, accused Doillon of sexual assault in 2011.

The French film industry earlier was shaken by sexual misconduct accusations against actor Gérard Depardieu.

In 2020, protests by women’s rights activists were staged during the Cesar Awards ceremony as director Roman Polanski won, in absentia, the best director award. Actor Adèle Haenel, who denounced alleged sexual assault by another French director in the early 2000s when she was 15, got up and walked out of the room.

Polanski is still wanted in the United States decades after he was charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
