ROCKFORD (WREX) — For 20 years the former home of Magna Supermarket has sat empty, but Wednesday morning, the city announced it purchased the property.
Bonnie Jefferson owns Bonnie's Boutique, a shop just a few steps down from the abandoned storefront. She and other business owners along the Miracle Mile are happy something is finally being done about it.
"I'm looking forward to someone coming in and doing something with it or the city tearing it down, whichever one works," Jefferson says.
Mayor McNamara promised it won't be abandoned much longer.
"It was important for us to make the announcement that we now have the title to the Magna property," McNamara says. "That will either be redeveloped or torn down this year in 2020."
It was music to local business owners' ears.
"It's a good thing," Miracle Mile Association President Arne Jacobsen says. "It's a good day."
Jacobsen says he and many others have waited for this day for far too long.
"Mayor McNamara has done a fantastic job," Jacobson says. "His vision for cleaning up the city [is] very respectable."
The impact of Magna's abandonment affected far more than the lot it sits on and the mayor says his department was cognizant of that.
"That property has held the Miracle Mile hostage for 20 years," McNamara says.
He says in it's nature, blight lowers property values and that's exactly what happened here. Local business owners say they're eager to see value and pride return to this area.
"We'll try and add value to our economic footprint," Jacobsen says.
"I'm hoping for some other retail business, just so it will pick up the traffic around here," Jefferson added.
It's a much needed facelift for an area that's ready to see change.
