Dogs, cats deserve a happy holidays too at forever homes - The Daily Journal

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Feliz Navidad! Or just plain happy holidays, whatever it is that you may celebrate.

As I sit to write this on the Friday before Christmas, in spite of the fact that it is December, typically a slower period for us, the shelter is packed to the gills. Within the next 24 hours, 18 pets are scheduled to go to their new homes; unfortunately, that still leaves 171 in the shelter and another 83 in foster care. Let’s hope that through the next week many more of those 250 pets will also be headed home during the holidays.

More: Think about it and choose wisely when considering adopting a pet

Once January hits, our adoptions usually slow down quite a bit so it always makes me sad to walk through the kennels and cat rooms on New Year’s Eve and see the pets that have been passed over. It’s a pretty fair bet that they’ll be here for another month or two if they hadn’t been chosen yet. It’s a lousy way for them to have to spend the winter but at least they are warm, fed and cared for.

On that note, I will keep the column short this week so that we can get a couple more pictures of our fuzzy faced friends that are still here ... waiting.

DOGS OF THE WEEK

Bella is a 5-year-old pit mix with adorable pointy ears and a beautiful coat! She is looking for her perfect match ... could it be you?

Sweet and gentle Chula is hoping someone will give her a chance at forever!

This happy-go-lucky low rider is Eedie Munster, and she'd be very happy if she got lucky enough to find a home with you. Eedie is a little shy at first, but warms up quickly and trots along nicely on the leash.

Wilbur is a sweet and loving little man. He is very gentle when trying to play and even when taking treats from hands! Wilbur is housebroken and gets along well with other dogs! This pet is currently in a foster home, not at the shelter. If you are interested in adopting this pet please complete an adoption questionnaire. Once your questionnaire is processed, the foster home will be in touch with you.

Kessler is a handsome fella who would love a family to cuddle and play with! He came to the shelter after his family no longer wanted him due to him escaping the yard. He is a sweet boy who tries his best to be friendly but the shelter scares him. When he is out of his kennel he is a lovely boy who just wants affection. Kessler is needs some training and he would need to either be walked or have a secure fenced in yard to run and play in. He tends to not want to share his toys so his home would most likely have to be toy free. He prefers little dog friends and doesn't like kitties. His ideal home would be where he is given the attention he craves and the structure he needs. Come meet Kessler he will steal your heart.

Bourbon is a happy go lucky one year old pit bull terrier. This big guy loves everyone!

Kenya's the type of boy who didn't have very many friends in school but that's okay because he's independent and happy doing things with himself and his human companion. Interested in getting in shape for the summer, well look no further Kenya will be your own personal trainer. He'll give you the best workout of your life and a run for your money but once your both nice and tired he will snuggle up right behind your legs. Better come quick before some snatches this personal trainer.

Herman Munster is a handsome, three year old pit bull terrier that has had a difficult start in life. He is slow to trust but once he does, you have a very affection and loyal companion. This is a good dog that needs a second chance.

Meet Diamond. In the rough. Or is it ruff? This Diamond needs a little polishing with her manners. She's a bit timid, but warms up quickly outside of the kennel and would love to live her life that way. She's about 3 years old and loves to play with other dogs. This sweet lady had a rough start in life but is am ready to move on to bigger and better things. Meeting new people is great but she may want to take things slow but once she knows you you'll be besties, She's all about the belly rubs and a being a snuggle bug. Please consider adding Diamond to your family, she won't disappoint!

CATS OF THE WEEK

Midge is a 2-year-old sweetheart who loves to be petted and doesn't mind being picked up and held, sunny windows, and other cats!

Saki and her sibling Arisa are both dog friendly. They were well socialized in foster care but are very bonded to each other.

Big Daddy needs a patient owner who will spend time breaking down his walls. He’s shy but affectionate.

Arisa is a sweet cat who has a deformed eye. Her and her sibling are bonded and need a home together.

Ebenezer is a sweet boy. He’s one and a half years old. He is in quarantine because he’s getting over a cold, but still ask to meet him.

Nathan Drake is 10 months old. Does it get any cuter than this?

Rum is a 5-year-old tortoiseshell. She is looking for a warm couch and a head scratcher.

Pastel is a 2-year-old male ginger. He been with us two weeks and doesn’t like our accommodations. He deserves better. Maybe you could please him better.
