Notebook: U-M happy for Peters, Harbaugh praises coordinators - 247Sports

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Michigan football team hosts Michigan State this weekend in the annual rivalry matchup. But one former Wolverines starter already has a win over the Spartans this season.

Brandon Peters, who played for Michigan from 2016-18 before leaving as a graduate transfer this spring, had the best game of his career against Michigan State last week.

He completed 22 of 42 passes for a career-high 369 yards and three touchdowns. Largely thanks to him, Illinois erased a 28-3 lead, mounting its largest comeback in school history and becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2014.

And while Peters’ career at Michigan didn’t work out as glowingly, the Wolverines remain happy for their one-time starting quarterback.

“Said (over text), ‘Great job, congratulations on a fine game,’ ” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday.

Peters, who told The Athletic that fans were calling him “Michigan reject” in Saturday’s game, was visibly fired up during Illinois’ comeback.

For his former teammates, it was fun to watch from Ann Arbor.

“I haven’t talked to BP yet, but I mean, we all saw it,” senior guard Ben Bredeson said with a laugh. “We all saw that. He was one of my really good friends here, and we love seeing him perform on the big stage and really do well. So we’re happy for that."

Harbaugh taking pride in coordinators

Later on Monday on Harbaugh and the Wolverines’ weekly “Inside Michigan Football” radio show, Harbaugh was effusive in his praise of the Wolverines’ coordinators.

First he noted that he felt first-year offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has grown in his first season as a play-caller. While it’s short-sighted to tie an offense’s success or failure to the offensive coordinator, Michigan has increased its scoring by 33.1 percent in its last 10 quarters.

Harbaugh thinks Gattis deserves at least some credit for that.

"I’ve seen him develop very well," Harbaugh said. "He’s got the full respect of the players and the coaches. He works extremely hard at it. I think he’s doing a heck of a job. He does a really good job game planning and is really decisive in the play calling.”

On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Don Brown once again is heading one of the nation’s top defenses. While the Wolverines’ defensive struggles at Wisconsin may ultimately sour Michigan’s entire season, the Wolverines are now up to fourth nationally in yards per play allowed, seventh in total defense and 11th in scoring defense.

According to Harbaugh, much of Brown’s ability to annually replicate strong defenses is his old-school approach to coaching and teaching.

"Don is great," Harbaugh said. "He’s a really hard worker. He’s really intense. I’m inspired as a coach of being around him all the time.

"We call him the oldest grad assistant in football. Not only is he the defensive coordinator, but he’s drawing the cards, too. He draws probably 150 to 200 cards per practice.”

While drawing cards is a quirk not many assistants possess, another Brown staple might be the strangest. In his fourth season as Michigan’s defensive coordinator, Brown still has yet to have an office in Schembechler Hall.

Instead, Brown wants to be in the defense’s conference room, sharing ideas and collaborating.

"He doesn’t have an office,” Harbaugh said. “His office is in the defensive staff room. He is, at all times, in that chair. If you want to find Don Brown, he’s going to be in that defensive staff room."
