Legendary musician Neil Young celebrates his 74th birthday today. The multiple Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee was born in Toronto on November 12, 1945 and moved to Winnipeg, where he spent most of his formative years, in 1952. In honor of Neil’s birthday, JamBase compiled videos from his triumphant return to Winnipeg with Crazy Horse for 2019 shows at the Burton Cummings Theatre For The Performing Arts on February 3 and at Centennial Concert Hall on February 4.
Young is an artist unlike any other who has been incredibly prolific since his start at a musician and eschews industry norms and chasing paydays in order to “follow the muse.” Neil first burst upon the scene as a member of Buffalo Springfield and then embarked on a solo career that continued in between stints fronting Crazy Horse and Promise Of The Real as well as collaborations with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and David Crosby in the iconic CSNY, among other projects.
In 1969, Neil tapped Crazy Horse as his backing band for his second studio album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Neil Young’s relationship with Crazy Horse continues through the present and has withstood a number of lineup changes. The latest Crazy Horse lineup features longtime members Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina along with more recent addition Nils Lofgren. Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s current incarnation made their debut on May 1, 2018 in Fresno, California and has since played six additional shows. The band recently released the studio album Colorado, which was recorded this past spring in Telluride.
On February 3 and 4, Young brought Crazy Horse to Winnipeg for a pair of homecoming shows. Neil started each concert with a series of solo performances before teaming with Crazy Horse for the rest of his set and encores. The first night saw Young bust out “Distant Camera” from his Silver & Gold LP for the first time since June 2, 1999 and featured “Don’t Be Denied,” which he last played with Crazy Horse in 1997. More surprises were in store on the second night as Neil Young & Crazy Horse dusted off “Danger Bird” off Zuma after the song was on the shelf for nearly six years. Next up was “Wonderin’,” which was last played by Neil on March 21, 1996. Each show also featured plenty of beloved classics including “Like A Hurricane,” “Fuckin’ Up” and “Cortez The Killer.”
