Jrue Holiday trade rumors: Pelicans star reportedly happy in New Orleans as deadline, difficult stretch loom - CBS Sports

The New Orleans Pelicans were at the center of last year's NBA trade deadline by virtue of Anthony Davis' request to be moved. They once again have the best player conceivably on the market this season in Jrue Holiday. The difference, however, is that Holiday is in no rush to find a new team.

Holiday, a former All-Star and one of the NBA's best defensive guards, has reportedly made it clear that he is happy in New Orleans according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Charania's report also indicates that Holiday wants to see how the Pelicans, who have had Zion Williamson for only four games so far, play the rest of the season before making any long-term decisions on his future. That suits the Pelicans just fine, as vice president of basketball operations David Griffin reportedly wants to see this roster play together for an entire season.

Holiday is far from the only meaningful veteran contenders will try to poach off of the Pelicans' roster. JJ Redick would certainly garner plenty of interest among shooting-needy playoff teams, and Derrick Favors, on an expiring contract, could help anyone that needs more size. At the moment, it doesn't appear as though any of the three are available, but Griffin's resolve on that stance could be tested over the next week.

The Pelicans currently trail the Memphis Grizzlies by five games for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. The two teams play tonight in New Orleans. Afterward, the Grizzlies get two relatively easy games against the Detroit Pistons and the Luka Doncic-less Dallas Mavericks, while the Pelicans travel to Houston to face the Rockets before hosting the 41-6 Milwaukee Bucks in their final games before the deadline. The schedule gets substantially easier for New Orleans from there and much harder for Memphis as well.

But there is a very real scenario looming in the week ahead of the trade deadline in which the Pelicans trail the Grizzlies by seven or eight full games in the schedule with only two months to play, and that doesn't even factor in the teams between them in the standings such as the San Antonio Spurs, Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns, who won't go down without a fight.

In a perfect world, the Pelicans would have had a healthy version of this roster available all season and seen it contend for a playoff spot. But in reality, the Pelicans might find themselves out of realistic playoff contention in the next week, and if that is the case, they will at least need to consider the possibility of trading their older players to continue to add younger ones to their existing core.

It would take a substantial offer to pry Holiday loose under any circumstances, but if the next week goes a certain way, such an offer might at least tempt Griffin in a way none have so far. Charania lists the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat as potential suitors, and if New Orleans has a chance to add a young player like Kendrick Nunn or Michael Porter Jr. with its playoff chances already gone, it is a path the Pelicans should absolutely consider no matter how badly Holiday wants to stay in New Orleans.

How Memories of Kindness Can Make You Happy - Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley

Just this month, a group of middle school students in Alabama made the news for posting positive notes on the lockers of fellow students. For Christmas, a few Attleboro, MA, students chipped in to buy their beloved school janitor new boots as a present. And in December, a Michigan waitress received a $2,020 tip for a $23 dinner bill, sparking the “2020 Tip Challenge” craze.

People perform acts of kindness both to do good and to feel good. Research finds that being kind makes us happy, can help to lower our blood pressure, and encourages stronger social connections. People who perform acts of kindness even report having more sex! Now, a new study suggests that we can access some of these benefits simply by recalling acts of kindness we did in the past—making kindness a gift that keeps on giving.

Researchers from the University of California, Riverside, conducted a three-day experiment with 532 undergraduate students. The students were randomly assigned to one of four tasks: 1) performing acts of kindness; 2) recalling acts of kindness they did in the past; 3) performing and recalling acts of kindness; and 4) neither performing nor recalling acts of kindness.

Advertisement X

On day one, students in groups 1 and 3 were asked to perform three acts of kindness for someone else in the next 24 hours. As examples, the researchers suggested things like “cooking dinner for friends or family, doing a chore for a family member, paying for someone’s coffee in line behind you, visiting an elderly relative, or writing a thank you letter.” On day two, students in groups 2 and 3 were asked to recall acts of kindness they did prior to the experiment. On each of the three days, participants filled out a survey that looked at their positive and negative feelings over the past 24 hours and their overall life satisfaction.

The researchers found that study participants across all the kindness groups saw an uptick in their well-being over the course of the experiment. Participants reported an increase in positive feelings and life satisfaction and a decrease in negative feelings whether they performed acts of kindness, recalled acts of kindness, or did both. And their improved well-being was enduring, remaining fairly stable through day three of the study.

You might imagine that participants who both performed and recalled acts of kindness would be the happiest, but doing both didn’t seem to provide an additional benefit. As the researchers sum it up, “Individuals who seek to efficiently improve their well-being may be just as successful by remembering kind acts that they have performed in the past as actually doing more such acts in the future.”

Does this mean we can simply sit at home and ponder our past generosity, rather than getting out into the world and being kind to others? The answer is no, of course, even beyond all the altruistic reasons you might have for being kind.

“We do not suggest that people should stop being kind to others. Indeed, happiness seekers should continue to act prosocially towards others to create more memories of these acts,” the researchers write. After all, you have to perform acts of kindness in order to have acts to remember.

The major takeaway from this study is a reminder not to forget all of our past acts of kindness, which can also be a source of well-being. If you’re looking for a quick boost, take a few minutes to recall the last time you did something nice for someone. And the next time you perform an act of kindness, make sure you log that kindness memory so you can revisit it later.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Chief Justice: Congressional Hits and Misses - Roll Call

“I’m sure this is exactly how you planned to celebrate,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said to birthday boy John G. Roberts Jr., the chief justice, as another week of the Senate impeachment trial got underway. While the Senate squabbled over calling witnesses, Rep. Marc Veasey took a trip to Chuck E. Cheese, Speaker Nancy Pelosi plugged her Super Bowl pick and Sen. Rand Paul ditched the trial altogether to complain about his question not being read.

Trump: 'This Is a Happy Period for Us'; 'We Call This Impeachment Light' - CNSNews.com

(CNSNews.com) - Touting his accomplishments at a rally in Iowa Thursday night, President Donald Trump criticized Democrats for their "partisan rage" and dismissed the "deranged witch hunt hoax" to oust him as "impeachment light."

"You know, we're having probably the best years that we've ever had in the history of our country, and I just got impeached," he said. "Can you believe these people?" he asked. "They impeached Trump."

Trump said the Democrat effort won't work:

"Watch. Just watch," he said:

They want to nullify your ballots, poison our democracy, and overthrow the entire system of government. That's not happening. I can tell you that.

Washington Democrats have spent the last three years trying to overturn the last election. Why am I not worried? I should be worried.

Remember Nixon? It was a dark time. With Clinton, it was not good. They say that with Johnson, that was a long time ago, none of us remember, but they say it was a very dark period.

This is a happy period for us. It is a happy period because we call this impeachment light. This is light.

Trump noted that on Thursday, he hit his highest poll numbers since his election.

"Because the American people, and frankly people all over the world, know it is a hoax. They understand it. They know it' a hoax.

"And we have a great party, the Republican Party. They know what's going on. They’re going to treat us very fairly. But the Democrats are trying to overturn the last election. We will make sure that they face another crushing defeat in 2020."

Trump told the crowd, "Together we are going to win back the House, we are going to hold the Senate and we are going to keep that beautiful, gorgeous, incredible White House."

Varney: Trump has won, Americans are happy - Fox Business

Stepping away from politics and ignoring the media, the vast majority of Americans are happy with their everyday lives, FOX Business’ Stuart Varney argued in his latest “My Take.”

“Contrary to all the negativity splashed across our screens every day, Gallup found 84 percent of us satisfied with the overall quality of our lives,” Varney said.

THESE 4 FACTORS BOLSTERED TRUMP'S ECONOMY

After three years of Trump’s presidency, the country is feeling better about race relations, income distribution and opportunity, he added. It is the exact opposite of what Democrats and the media have been telling the American people, Varney argued.

“Truth is, the elites have been carried away by their hatred of President Trump in their urge to slime him. They’ve painted a picture of Americans—you and I—as unhappy, bigoted, stupid and bad. But the jig is up,” Varney said.

TRUMP SUPER BOWL AD DROPS

Trump has won on virtually every front and impeachment has become an embarrassment for Democrats, he argued.

“The economy is a triumph of tax and red-tape reforms. Iran’s in a box, China is in trouble and with nine months to the election, the president’s opponents are bitterly divided and, frankly, misguided,” Varney said.

He added that somebody should inform the Democrats that massive tax hikes and the fantasy land Green New Deal would be a disaster.

“[With] 276 days to the election, President Trump is riding high,” Varney concluded.

Does Your Company Culture Lead to Happy Customers? - Entrepreneur

5 min read

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Treat people in your organization better than you want them to treat your customers. This startlingly simple statement can mean the difference between success and failure of any initiative you take to improve the customer experience and become customer-centric. The link between employee experience and customer experience is obvious: if the employee experience is generally poor, employees won’t care much about the customers — or the company. Conversely, IBM found that if the employee experience is positive, and people feel valued and happy, they will care much more about the customer experience and be proud to work for the company.

Related: 10 Examples of Companies With Fantastic Cultures

The two concepts closely mirror one another: just as the customer experience is the sum of every interaction customers have with the organization throughout the customer journey, the employee experience is the sum of every interaction employees have from recruitment through to the end of their time with the organization. And since every interaction a customer has with the organization is thought of, created, designed, built, tested, and managed by the people who work for you, their experience as employees will directly and significantly impact the customer experience. This is true both at the individual level — one happy employee can make a personal impact on specific customer touchpoints — but also on a collective level, as a generally positive employee experience will result in lower turnover, higher engagement, better productivity, and a more customer-centric culture overall.

The employee experience includes the physical environment, technological tools, and culture of the organization. If employees are physically safe and comfortable, have the tools to do their job effectively, and are treated well, they will have a more positive employee experience. Of course, the concept of being “treated well” is subjective, so improving the employee experience means not only adopting an employee-centric mindset, but also treating employees as individuals, each with their own unique circumstances, goals, and needs.

Treat employees as you want customers to be treated

If improving the customer experience is a corporate priority, then leaders at all levels have a responsibility to create an experience for employees that mirrors what is expected for customers. Here are a few items that will have a real impact on the employee experience:

Begin with the company culture

Company culture is a necessary foundation for creating a positive employee experience. If the organization’s culture is one where employees embrace behaviors such as trust, collaboration, communication, respect, transparency, and inclusion, they will, in turn, treat your customers in the same manner as they treat their colleagues.

Related: How to Create an Amazing Company Culture

Don’t forget the physical environment

Another foundational piece of the employee experience is the physical environment and the tools available to perform their job. If people feel unsafe at work, are crammed together in a tiny space, or are otherwise uncomfortable, they will not have a good experience working with you. Similarly, it is important to remove barriers to doing exceptional work by ensuring you have the technology and processes in place to help people work effectively, collaborate with others, and come up with innovative ideas that best support your customer.

Train your leaders

In order to have an employee-centric workplace, all your leaders need the skills to treat people fairly, equitably, and most importantly, kindly. They must be trained to coach, listen effectively, and answer difficult questions with transparency and empathy.

Related: How to Create a Winning Company Culture

Treat your employees as individuals

Treating employees fairly means treating them as individuals. If you need to impose a restriction due to an individual's behavior, deal with that on the individual level. Similarly, empowering employees based on track record, role and experience shows them that their contributions are seen and valued and that you believe in their ability to make decisions that are in the best interest of your customers.

Consider the Whole Person

People are so much more than just employees. They have a job, but they also have families, hobbies, dreams, goals, needs, personal emergencies, and health issues. The more you can help them fit their job into their life, the more you demonstrate that you value them as human beings. Not only will this make your employees feel valued, but it will also come back to you in spades if you ever need to ask the team to go above and beyond in exceptional circumstances.

The bottom line

To be customer-centric you must first be employee-centric. When employees feel cared for, respected, supported, and happy with the way they are treated at work, it is much easier for them to treat their customers in the same way. In fact, they will become your biggest brand advocates, and you will begin to develop a competitive advantage that contributes to a competitive employee and customer experience.

Avenue enlists Happy Returns amid transition to digital-only retailer - Retail Dive

Dive Brief:

 • On Thursday, the return logistics company Happy Returns announced a partnership with plus size women's retailer Avenue that will allow customers to return online Avenue merchandise to more than 700 Happy Returns locations.

 • Avenue customers can return merchandise to Happy Returns' Return Bars without needing to print a label or box the item, and their refunds will be initiated immediately, per the company statement.

 • In addition to Avenue, Happy Returns is working with other brands including Everlane, Rothy's and Hips & Curves, the company noted in its press release.

Dive Insight:

Avenue is the latest retailer Happy Returns has added to its roster as it continues to grow. In September, the returns company added World Market to its list of partner retailers. In April last year, Happy Returns received $11 million in funding from PayPal, U.S. Venture Partners and Upfront Ventures.

Retail Dive discovered in August that Avenue had plans to close all of its brick-and-mortar stores, which were later confirmed by the company. The apparel retailer then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In November, Avenue converted the case to a Chapter 7 liquidation. As a result, the retailer went from having 222 stores to being online-only, making the case for services like Happy Returns more clear.

"Offering our shoppers Happy Returns for returning online purchases is a core part of our digital-only strategy, Avenue CEO Phil Ryan said in a statement. "We expect Happy Returns' solution for returns in person will help us succeed without a physical retail presence."

For digital direct-to-consumer brands, the returns process is crucial for keeping customers happy. Per a recent Oracle report, 57% of retailers believe the returns process is easy, but the same percentage of consumers think returns are cumbersome or could be easier. Web-based supply chain firm Voxware found that 95% of shoppers said the returns experience influences whether they chose to patronize a retailer in the future.

Trump Claims 'This Is A Happy Period,' Tries To Water Down His Impeachment To 'Impeachment-Lite' - TPM

President Donald Trump isn’t bothered that the House impeached him and the Senate is currently deliberating over whether to kick him out of office.

In fact, he’s having a great time. Really.

During a campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa on Thursday night, Trump told his supporters that impeachment was “not good” for President Bill Clinton and a “dark time” for presidents Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson.

But not for Trump!

“This is a happy period for us,” the President said as the crowd cheered. “It’s a happy period.”

“It’s a happy period because we call this ‘impeachment-lite,'” he continued. “This is light.”

That’s….not how impeachment works, even though the GOP-controlled Senate will almost certainly block witnesses and acquit Trump in the impeachment trial.

The President was definitively impeached by the House on December 18, and as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said shortly before the trial began, “he’s been impeached forever.”

How Kesha Found Her Way Back to Happy - E! NEWS

"I'm at a place in my life where I'm really okay with how much I love pop music. I'm really okay if people think I'm a cheesy bitch—because part of me is."

For a minute there, it seemed as though Kesha might not ever find her way back to that place she described to The Atlantic in November 2019. After all, she'd, for lack of a better word, been through it over the last few years.

There was the four-year gap in albums between 2012's Warrior and 2016's Rainbow, during which she checked into rehab for an eating disorder and filed suit against producer Lukasz Gottwald, better known in the industry as Dr. Luke, alleging physical, sexual and emotional abuse and employment discrimination in a case that remains ongoing to this. (Gottwald has denied all charges and countersued for breach of contract and defamation. She remains locked into the contract she signed with him over a decade ago as the court battle continues to this day.)

And while Rainbow marked her critically-acclaimed return to music, it was done with a vulnerability expressed through rock, folk, and soul sensibilities. Basically, anything other than the sort of music she'd made with Gottwald. (To be fair, there were a number of bangers on Rainbow, just bangers of a different breed.)

Even Kesha herself was unsure if she'd ever find herself back in the sort of party-girl mode that fans first got a taste of when her debut single "Tik Tok" took the world by storm in 2009, becoming the longest-running No. 1 by a female artist on her debut since Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" in 1977.

"I thought I wasn't deserving of putting out fun, dancey, drinking songs, celebrating life," she told The Independent in November. "I felt like I didn't deserve to be – or shouldn't be – happy. That it was somehow dismissive of what I'd so publicly been through."

And yet, here we are, celebrating the release of High Road, her fourth studio album, and her return of the "cheesy bitch" who loves pop music.

It all began, she's explained, thanks to a phone call from her brother Lagan. "He was like, 'Why don't you write some pop songs?' " she told Rolling Stone. "'You're good at it, you like it.'"

Reluctantly, and with a bit of indignation at what she thought was a reductive request, she nevertheless obliged. "I was like, 'Fine. I'll go write a f--king pop song,'" she said. What poured out was second single "My Own Dance," a pop banger that finds her addressing the many demands on her head-on. "So, the internet called and it wants you back/But could you kinda rap and not be so sad?" she sings in the song's second verse before hitting a pre-chorus that reminds everyone she's so much more than what they think of her.

"'You're the party girl, you're the tragedy'/But the funny thing's I'm f--king everything"

"I was like, 'Wait, this is superfun. Why am I keeping myself from the greatest pleasure of my life?'" she told the magazine. "And I have to say, that song, and that conversation with my brother, put me on the path of finding probably the most severe happiness I've ever had my entire life."

As she explained to The Independent, "Rainbow was the admission and internal confrontation of a lot of really serious things that were happening in my life," she says, "and this record is now reclaiming what I always have been, which is a fun, emotional, smart, wild, genreless, labelless human being. And people might say, 'Oh, you're just going back to your old party tricks,' but really, I'm reclaiming what I created in the first place."

That's not to say that she's abandoned the maturity brought forth on the 2016 LP. No, it's there amongst the bangers, which feel like celebratory exaltations because of what she's referencing, not in spite of it, and the quieter moments of introspection alike. "You can be a woman who goes out and you party, and you have drinks … and you smoke some weed, and then you get a tattoo," she told The Atlantic. "And then the next day you go for a run, and then you meditate, and then you go to the studio and write a song about a totally different emotion. That's just what being human is."

For Kesha, High Road is truly a moment of reclamation: reclaiming her sound, her voice, her strength. As she told The New York Times this month while celebrating Selena Gomez's comeback album Rare, "I love listening to women who have been through things but come out still fully badass. I can especially relate to people who have to go through things publicly and then get to put out music that reclaims their power, positivity and strength. And I very much feel like that's what I'm doing on my new record, so I have a lot of love for other women who do that."

"I realized I don't have to live under a dark cloud forever," she told Rolling Stone. "No one's telling me to be happy. I earned my happiness, and it's OK to be happy. And hopefully that's inspiring to people. I'm a survivor of s--t, but it doesn't mean I have to be defined by what I've been through for the rest of my life."

Now, let's dance.

High Road is available everywhere now.

'Happy to be a trailblazer' Katie Sowers becomes first female coach to reach Super Bowl - WABC-TV

Katie Sowers will make history on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers offensive assistant will become the first female member of an NFL staff to coach in a Super Bowl.

In her fourth season in the NFL, Sowers said anybody can lead regardless of gender if they're a true leader.

"Being the first female in the Super Bowl, it's surreal," Sowers said from Super Bowl media day. "It really is. But what I want to continue to say is that even though I'm the first, the most important thing is I'm not the last and we continue to grow it."

Sowers played in the Women's Football Alliance for eight years and was on the 2013 U.S. Women's National Football Team. She previously spent time with the Atlanta Falcons, where current 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was the offensive coordinator.

Sowers' accomplishment is the second milestone in as many years for women in the NFL. In 2019, referee Sarah Thomas became the first woman to officiate an NFL playoff game in an AFC divisional round clash between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers.

"I'm willing and I'm happy to be a trailblazer," Sowers said. "I know that other women, other young girls are watching this and maybe their path is a little clearer now."

Super Bowl LIV between the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

More people are returning to work after retiring—and they're happy about it - MarketWatch

This article is reprinted by permission from NextAvenue.org.

When Kathy Pauss retired from her job as a school secretary a few months before turning 65, the Downers Grove, Ill. resident thought it was for good. She was looking forward to gardening, spending time with her grandson and getting to a long list of projects she’d been itching to complete. She lasted just eight months before returning to work.

“I retired in June and went back in January,” laughs Pauss. “My gardening was done, my projects were all finished and my grandson was back in school. I missed people, and I wanted to help people and have human contact.”

She soon found a new position, working three days a week as a patient service specialist at a rehabilitation center less than a mile from her home. Pauss isn’t working again for the income as much as the meaning and connection she finds on the job.

Why people go back to work after retiring

More people are coming out of retirement and returning to the workforce for a number of reasons, says Catherine Collinson, CEO and president of the Transamerica Institute and the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies.

“Some of the reasons may be financial, and others include staying active and involved and enjoying what they do,” Collinson says. “Some people see it as an opportunity for an encore career or to try something new.”

Conni Eckstein, of Oklahoma City, had worked for Boeing as a manufacturing engineer for decades before retiring at 61 in 2016.

“I felt a need to do something else, and the hours and the travel that were required in my job got to be too much,” says Eckstein. She had lost her son, Damien, a U.S. Army veteran, to suicide in 2013, which influenced her decision as well.

Boomeranging to Boeing

After a once-in-a-lifetime sailing trip on a rented yacht in the Virgin Islands, and serving as a temporary director for a nonprofit for several months, though, Eckstein started feeling bored. That’s when her former Boeing BA, +0.40% manager asked her to return, part time, for what Eckstein calls “an outrageous amount of money.” Eckstein returned in 2018.

But she kept thinking about what she’d do when she “re-retired.” By the fall of 2018, Eckstein had had enough of the workplace politics and minutiae — and more clarity about how she wanted to spend her time.

These days, she finds meaning by volunteering with TAPS, a national nonprofit that supports those grieving the loss of members of the armed forces. She started a local TAPS care group in Oklahoma City and is a Peer Mentor.

Exploring options in retirement

One of the benefits of working in retirement is that you may have options you didn’t have before. That could be doing a similar job to the one you had previously, just part-time. Or trying a field you’ve wanted to explore.

Though Pauss knew she wanted to go back to work after retiring, she decided to be selective about how she’d do so. She says she wanted “more than just a job,” something part-time, and something near her home.

When an acquaintance mentioned a position at a nearby physical therapy facility, Pauss walked in with a résumé and introduced herself.

“I probably broke some of the common rules of applying for a job, but I knew the position was open and I wanted them to see me — that I wasn’t a 65-year-old lady, but a 65-year-young lady,” she says. “And I wanted to make sure that the place felt good; I wanted to work for my heart, not for the money.”

That’s a common thread among people returning to work after retiring, says Collinson.

“Often, people who go back to work in one fashion or another really enjoy working and problem-solving and the social connections,” she says.

What do you want to do?

If you’re retired, but feeling the itch to work, “ask yourself what you want to do — and explore those possibilities,” says Collinson. “Be creative in terms of your thinking…if you have a long history of work experience or have something you love to do, is there a new and different way to apply that experience?”

You might like sites like Retirementjobs.com to check out retirement-job options. But working for a nonprofit, either in a paid or volunteer position, can also let you reap the psychic rewards of making a difference.

“See what’s out there, and what is the best fit, and consider the financial ramifications if you need the money,” says Collinson.

Eckstein’s second try at retirement is happy and fulfilling, she says.

In addition to her volunteer work with TAPS, Eckstein is very active in Rotary and has developed a suicide prevention program for Rotary clubs. She also recently started doing improv comedy.

“I really had no expectation of what I was going to do [at first] and boom, it’s happening!” she says. “So many people I would have never met have come into my life…and I’m making a lot more friends.”

Pauss has been surprised by how much she is enjoying her second career.

All of her new colleagues are in their 20s, but that’s not a detriment to her. “I’m the ‘work mom’ to everyone, and that’s said with affection. And they are willing to learn from me. One of the things I didn’t expect was that I really love the challenge of learning something new. I honestly didn’t think I’d be working this long…but I love my patients, and I love what I do every day.”

Trump Senate impeachment defense: Don’t worry, we’re happy - Chicago Sun-Times

WASHINGTON — By the end of Friday, the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump could end with an acquittal. Prospects for Democrats finding enough GOP votes for witnesses faded late Thursday — after the trial wrapped for the day — when Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said no.

Senators on Thursday wrapped up two days of questions to the Trump lawyers and Democratic House Managers, with their inquiries carried to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, who is presiding, by young blue-suited Senate pages. No matter the road ahead, the conclusion will be the same, since there are not 67 votes to convict Trump and remove him from office.

The prospects of Democrats finding four Republicans to vote with them to demand witnesses and documents — the potential of finding 51 votes seemed brighter this week — all but ended, since Alexander was seen as the crucial fourth vote. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters before the Thursday session started the four votes remain elusive.

“We have always said this is an uphill fight,” Schumer said.

Takeaways:

FINAL DELIBERATIONS TO BE PRIVATE: In President Bill Clinton’s 1999 Senate impeachment trial, the final deliberations took place in private. The Senate chamber was cleared of lawyers for both sides, visitors and journalists who sit in the gallery.

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said she was told by her GOP Senate leaders “we will be deliberating in private,” though nothing official has been announced.

RAND PAUL BLOWING WHISTLE ON WHISTLEBLOWER: Since a whistleblower memo surfaced about Trump’s July 25 call pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to dig up dirt on Joe Biden and his son, Hunter — triggering the inquiry leading to Trump’s impeachment - Trump has been pushing to have his or her identity made public.

Indeed, forcing the whistleblower or Hunter Biden to testify in exchange for testimony from ex-National Security Adviser John Bolton has been part of the witness swaps floated by Republicans.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., took his quest to out the whistleblower to the Senate chamber, when a page carried his question card to a clerk who handed it to Roberts.

Roberts had warned senators not to disclose the whistleblower identity; Paul had something grander in mind. He wanted Roberts to read his question, which included the names of two people; he did not directly refer to them as the whistleblower.

Roberts studied the card for a few seconds. No fool, he was not taking the bait. Roberts said, “The presiding officer declines to read the question as submitted.”

After that, Paul left the Senate chamber — flouting rules for Senators to be in attendance — and held a press conference at the Senate radio-tv studio, where he read his question.

“With all due respect,” one reporter asked, “shouldn’t you be in the impeachment hearing right now?

For those who may figure that events have sailed past the whistleblower — either the allegations were right or not — Trump attorney Patrick Philbin capsulized the argument when he said Thursday that because the “motive” and “bias” of the whistleblower are not known, the process has been “infected from the beginning.”

“… Yes, this entire proceeding here is now the fruit of the poisonous tree,” Philbin said.

Ernst told reporters Paul’s question should have been read. “I think that all questions need to be considered by the body and hear those answers.”

“And if a senator is presenting a question, I think we should be able to hear the answer to that.”

THE ODD HAPPINESS DEFENSE: Trump lawyer Eric Herschmann delivered a political — not legal — defense of Trump at one point. He was trying to dissolve the key charge against the president that he was withholding military assistance to Ukraine for his personal political gain.

“Accusing the president of doing things, in their (the prosecutors) words, solely for personal and political gain in claiming that he is not doing things in the best interests of the American people — the American people are telling you just the opposite,” Herschmann said.

“The president’s approval rating, while we are sitting here in the middle of these impeachment proceedings, have hit an all time high. A recent poll shows that the American people are the happiest they’ve been with the direction of the country in 15 years. Whether it’s the economy, security. Military preparedness. Safer streets or safer neighborhoods. They’re all way up. We, the American people, are happier.”

There you have it! Since the American people are happy and Trump remains popular, he should not be convicted.

FICTION....... The Happy Store # 27 - Day of the Diabled - HNN Huntingtonnews.net

When the doors opened at 10:00 a.m., Walter Graybill, the store manager, surveyed the bare spaces on the showroom floor where bookshelves, end tables, ottomans, armchairs, and huge Grecian-style urns ought to have been, and he quietly got busy with the scarcity of items that were left.

Clementine Fraile’s first customer of the day was a stocky, middle aged man with soft brown eyes and a pugilistic nose.

In a gruff but not unpleasant voice, he’d called out, “Hey, Miss. Over here.”

Clementine followed him to the tableware section of The Happy Store, where he stopped in front of a man seated on a dining room chair. He was in his 50s, slim, with silver hair, an aristocratic face, and beautiful hands. There was a black Labrador retriever at his feet.

Sensing their presence, he looked up. “To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?” he asked.

Clementine introduced herself, and with a smile in her voice, said, “And whom do I have the pleasure of assisting?”

The blind man answered, “I am Andrew. My friend here is Lefty Larry.”

Lefty grinned and bowed. Then he unfolded a piece of paper, thrust it at Clementine, and said, “Mister Andrew is giving a dinner party tonight. He needs these here things.”

In awkward block letters and with several misspellings, the list specified: Two ornamental vases. Different sizes, different patterns, for either side of a Victorian mahogany sideboard; faux flowers to fill the vases; and dinnerware for twelve, preferably blue.

As Clementine and Lefty explored The Happy Store together, she learned that he was once the middleweight boxing champion of Pittsburg, and that he had met Andrew when he was driving a cab in New York City. Andrew, once a famous set designer for the Metropolitan Opera, had hired Lefty to drive him and help around the house after he lost his sight.

“I’m his factotum,” Lefty Larry said proudly.

The party that night, he went on, was for the family of Andrew’s daughter’s fiancé, and (as Lefty put it), “the boss wants to freshen up the house and get a whole lot of new crap.”

For the next forty minutes, Clementine brought her customer items that she thought he might like for his tactile inspection. Of each, he inquired, “What material is it made of? What color is it, and be specific? Is it light blue or dark blue? Navy or sapphire? Glossy or matte finish?” And so on.

Eventually he chose a turquoise mosaic vase for one end of the sideboard and a gold and silver crackled glass vase for the other. Clementine talked him out of stems for the vases, assuring him that they were sufficiently decorative in and of themselves. And she heartily agreed with his selection of the Chateau Claire indigo blue pattern for the dinnerware.

Meanwhile, Walter rearranged his meager supply of merchandise to make a vast space look elegant instead of empty. He created room settings atop rugs, accessorizing the last two sofas in the store with arm chairs, coffee tables, throw blankets, pillows, and (because he had them) even more pillows. He did the same for the dining room tables, arranging chairs around them that could be described as not too “matchy-matchy” – the clear implication being that matched sets of dinnerware or matching chairs were beneath contempt.

Aaah, Walter!

Later that day, Betty Davis – after investing two hours with a darling old man who looked like Pinocchio’s father Geppetto and had purchased over $5,000 worth of sofas, cabinets, and arm chairs and also had opened a Happy Store credit card – experienced a sudden reversal of fortune. A short, stylish woman in her eighties rushed into the store and searched it frantically with her eyes. When she found Geppetto, she rushed forward, thrust her arm gently through his, and led him to a chair about twenty feet away. Then she hurried back to the checkout desk where Betty had just rung up the sale.

In a hushed voice, Mrs. Geppetto apologetically explained that her dear husband was “experiencing the early stages of dementia, and…”

Betty raised a compassionate hand.

“You don’t have to say another word. I’ll cancel the credit card, and void the sale.”

On her way out, Mrs. Geppetto was so grateful for Betty’s understanding that she bought an enormous red plush Valentine pillow.

“For his naps,” she explained.

Across the store, Clementine was finishing what she’d started to think of as “The Day of the Disabled” by assisting five customers to buy a chair, four of whom were deaf and one of whom – a teenaged girl – was not. It was a comparatively painless experience, except for not-knowing where to look or who to talk to, since the girl’s mother would tell her infinitely patient daughter what she needed to purchase, and the girl

would then tell Clementine, who answered the mother, who could read her lips if she had wanted to, but instead looked at the teenager, who would sign Clementine’s responses, and so on.

After that, the hours proceeded more or less uneventfully until Athena, having spent the entire day tracking down the missing truck, emerged from her office. She stopped to study the showroom, which had been transformed in her absence.

Empty vases gave the illusion of being filled with cherry blossoms, although they contained only one stem. Tables strewn with huge magnolia napkin rings and brightly colored glass spheres hid an embarrassing lack of goblets, candlesticks, and plates.

She stood in stunned admiration, ran a hand through her wild red curls, and said, “Walter. You’re a magician.”

The store manager, in the middle of arranging a cobalt blue napkin between a green dinner plate and an ivory soup bowl, looked up. It had been a long day, and he was tired. He said to his assistant, “So?”

Athena responded, “So I don’t know if you’re going to want to hear this or not, but they found the truck.”

“And?”

“And it will be here at 6:00 o’clock tomorrow morning.”

Walter nodded.

“Good,” he said. Knowing all he had done that day would have to be undone within hours to make room for the double consignment of merchandize they would be unloading shortly before dawn.

Clementine walked up to Walter, a sympathetic look in her eyes, and she said, “Boss?”

He looked down at her and smiled ever-so-slightly in his barely-perceptible Walter-like way. Then, answering the question she had not asked, he said, “Don’t worry, Clementine. It’s just the nature of the job.”

Trump insists he isn't worried about impeachment: 'This is a happy period' | TheHill - The Hill

President TrumpDonald John TrumpDemocrats outraged over White House lawyer's claim that some foreign involvement in elections is acceptable Senators take reins of impeachment trial in marathon question session White House announces task force to monitor coronavirus MORE used a campaign rally in Iowa Thursday night to air grievances against House Democrats over his impeachment while describing a “happy period” for the Republican Party despite what he lambasted as a partisan “hoax.”

“We’re having probably the best years that we’ve ever had in our country, and I just got impeached! Can you believe these people? I got impeached. They impeached Trump,” Trump told the crowd in Des Moines, Iowa, Thursday evening.

“They want to nullify your ballots, poison our democracy, and overthrow the entire system of government,” Trump said of House Democrats. “That’s not happening — I can tell you that.”

Trump insisted he wasn’t worried about his impeachment – perhaps a reflection of his expected acquittal by the Republican-controlled Senate. The president told the crowd that the Republicans would “treat us very fairly,” in what seemed to be a passing reference to the upper chamber’s handling of his impeachment trial over the last several days.

“Why am I not worried? “They don’t love our country. I swear they don’t,” Trump claimed of House Democrats. “We have to take back the House of Representatives. We have to.”

The rally took place as Trump’s impeachment trial continued in Washington, with senators asking questions of Trump’s defense attorneys and House impeachment managers.

The Democrat-controlled House voted in December to impeach Trump for abusing his power by pressuring Ukraine for investigations into his political opponents and obstructing the congressional inquiry into his dealings with Kyiv.

Trump has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and the White House has accused Democrats of a political exercise to damage him ahead of 2020.

Closing arguments in the impeachment trial are slated to take place on Friday, after which the Senate will move to a question of whether to call additional witnesses in the trial.

Most Republicans have remained opposed to calling witnesses in the Senate, though a handful have been open to the possibility and the outcome of the vote is no a certainly. Democrats would need four Republicans to vote with them in order to call more witnesses.

Democrats have insisted the trial would not be a fair one if the upper chamber does not call witnesses, such as former national security adviser John BoltonJohn BoltonSenators take reins of impeachment trial in marathon question session Democratic senator to force vote requiring Roberts to weigh in on witnesses Overnight Defense: Bolton, GOP senators see close ties challenged | Republicans fume over Dem maneuver on Iran bills |Trump criticizes Democrats over war powers vote MORE, who has reportedly written about his firsthand knowledge of the Ukraine affair in an unpublished draft of his forthcoming book.

Trump’s attorneys and the White House, meanwhile, have urged a quick acquittal of the president by the GOP-controlled Senate.

If Republicans defeat an effort to call witnesses in the trial, a vote on conviction or acquittal could come as soon as Friday.

49ers’ Richard Sherman not happy about latest ‘random’ NFL drug test - San Francisco Chronicle

Barely more than 12 hours after lashing out at NFL owners for the “hypocrisy” of proposing a longer regular season, 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman found another reason to speak out Thursday morning.

Sherman, in a tweet posted about 7 a.m. Eastern time, said he was tapped for a performance enhancing drug (PED) test and a blood test for the second week in a row. He naturally wasn’t thrilled about this, sarcastically writing, “I gotta go play the lottery I must be the most lucky man in the world.”

Moments later, Sherman posted another tweet in which he wondered how many other players must have blood taken ahead of the Super Bowl.

“Probably a very exclusive fraternity,” he wrote.

If this all sounds familar, there’s good reason. Sherman also tweeted about getting drug tested after the 49ers dispatched Minnesota, 27-10, in a divisional-round playoff game Jan. 11 in Santa Clara. Sherman had a key, third-quarter interception in that game.

That time, he tweeted, “Hahahaha ball out and get the double dip.... PED and HGH tests.... hahaha gotta love it.”

Sherman, of course, has a long history of finding motivation wherever he can, from his status in the draft (fifth-round choice in 2011) to trading trash talk with then-49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree in the NFC Championship Game in January 2014, when Sherman played for Seattle.

Most recently, Sherman fired back when former Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis criticized his coverage abilities on Twitter, after the 49ers beat Green Bay for the NFC title.

God's Kids Korner: Just be happy! - Point Pleasant Register

photo

What makes you happy? There are a million different answers depending on whom you ask that question. We all want to be happy, and God wants us to be happy too. You might be surprised though what Jesus said about happiness and what truly makes us happy. It isn’t lots of money, lots of toys, a big house, being popular, winning sports teams, or things that we usually think of as making us happy.

The Bible has a lot to say about happiness in several places. One important place is Matthew 5: 1-12. These verses are called “The Beatitudes,” and you might want to have someone read them all to you. They are the “attitudes” that we need to have to really “be happy.” They might seem a little backwards when we first read them.

One day, Jesus went up on the side of a mountain. He sat down with His disciples and the people who were there and began to teach them about happiness. He told them eight different things that day. They say things like: Be happy when you are sad because then God will show you He can comfort you; Be happy when someone is mean to you because then God will show you He can give you peace; Be happy when you don’t have what you need because then God can show you He will provide everything you need, for example. There are several others listed in the scriptures above.

You see, happiness in not a feeling that is brought about by the things that we have or even the things that happen to us. It is an attitude inside us because of what we have in our hearts given to us and done for us by God. Proverbs 16:20 says, “Happy is he who trusts in the Lord.” Trusting God is the most important way to be happy. He will always be with us no matter what happens and will always want what is best for us. We can be happy always knowing God is for us – never against us. He has a good plan for our lives and loves us very much. So- Be Happy!!

Let us pray. Dear Lord, help us to always place our trust in You, so that we may experience the true happiness that only You can bring into our lives. Please help us to show others that same happiness. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.

Roger Federer Feeling Positive Despite Australian Open SF Loss To Novak Djokovic - ATP Tour

Roger Federer took the long view on Thursday despite coming up short in his bid to reach an eighth Australian Open final. The 38-year-old Swiss lost to Novak Djokovic 7-6(1), 6-4, 6-3 as the Serbian improved to 8-0 in Melbourne semi-finals.

But Federer still leaves Melbourne Park feeling positive about his first tournament of the year and what lies ahead for him in 2020. The third seed came back from the brink twice, against Aussie John Millman and American Tennys Sandgren, just to reach the semi-finals, and he pushed the seven-time champion Djokovic in the last four.

Federer served for the first set at 5-3 but was broken before Djokovic came back.

Overall, at the end of the day I guess I'm very happy. I got to be happy with what I achieved. It was the maximum to go to get at this tournament, especially after the Millman and the Sandgren match,” Federer said.

He fell to 5-1 on the season, and Djokovic now leads their ATP Head2Head series 27-23. The Swiss had been trying to reach his 32nd major championship final (20-11).

Federer was bothered by a groin injury that cropped up during his quarter-final against Sandgren, when Federer saved seven match points and prevailed in five sets.

I went for a scan that same night, was all right. After that, well, we didn't push it. I didn't practise. I took a day off the next day. Today I just really rested until as late as possible. But I didn't have any pain in the daily stuff. That was a positive sign,” Federer said.

The Swiss, however, has never retired from a tour-level match and managed his pain throughout the semi-final.

Today was horrible, to go through what I did. Nice entrance, nice sendoff, and in between is one to forget because you know you have a three per cent chance to win. Got to go for it. You never know. But once you can see it coming, that it's not going to work anymore, it's tough,” Federer said.

At the end of the day I'm very happy. I think I overall played all right. I know I can play better. At the same time I also know I can play much worse. With no tournaments beforehand, I think it's a very, very good result.”

Watch Live

Federer was optimistic that he'll be back to full strength in the very near future.

My feeling is rather quickly,” he said. “You want to be 100 per cent to be able to train again, then get ready for hopefully Dubai. Right now it's only guessing. I'm very happy that I don't feel any worse than when I started. That's for me super encouraging.”

This season could be a significant year for the 38-year-old. Last year, he won his 100th tour-level title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, joining American Jimmy Connors as the only men to cross the century mark with singles titles.

This year, Federer could pass Connors as the Open Era match wins leader. Connors has 1,274 match wins, 32 ahead of Federer, who has 1,242.

Roger Federer is 5-1 on the 2020 season.Rafael Nadal, with 19, and Djokovic, who will play for his 17th on Sunday, remain close behind.

Federer might have to do all that work a spot lower in the FedEx ATP Rankings as well. Austrian Dominic Thiem will rise to a career-high No. 3 if he wins the Australian Open title.

That's not to say that this will be Federer's final season, though. He plans to come back to Australia in 2021.

You never know what the future holds. But especially my age, you don't know. I'm confident. I'm happy how I'm feeling, to be honest. I got through a good, nice training block. No plans to retire,” Federer said.

From that standpoint, we'll see how the year goes, how everything is with the family. We'll go from there. Of course, I hope to be back.”
