Happy Winter Solstice! The shortest day of the year is Saturday, December 21 and the sun's rays are directly over the Tropic of Capricorn officially at 10:19 p.m. Central Time. Technically, all days are about 24 hours long, so it's not the shortest day, but saying so is much easier than saying “least amount of daylight” so we'll go with the easier phrase.
No matter how you say it, we'll start to see more of the sun each day between now and June. Tomorrow's daylight will be within a second of today's but then we start to gain more and more each day.
As for the weather, we started off yesterday morning much warmer than most of the week with lows only around 20. By afternoon, we were able to warm up into the 30s, and even low 40s in some spots off to the south of Eau Claire. This came with a mostly cloudy sky but we did see some sunshine late in the afternoon before sunset.
With the above freezing temperatures, we did melt some snow especially near and on roads. Overnight, however, that melted snow has frozen back into ice each of the past couple nights. This can create slippery roads overnight and can be very hard to see due to how thin the ice is. This is why it's sometimes called 'black ice'. It's not describing the color, rather how difficult it is to see, especially at night on blacktop roads.
Temperatures look to get even warmer today, climbing into the upper 30s and even further warming up to the low 40s tomorrow.
We'll keep the trend of above freezing highs and subfreezing lows through much of next week, so icy roads overnight and in the mornings will continue to be a threat.
Our next chance for precipitation starts late on Christmas and lasts through Thursday night, but this system is still too far out to be accurately tracked and we can't get more specific than this until early next week.
