Imagine drinking hot cider with a good book. Add in a warm blanket and a pair of cozy slippers. That warm, content, joyful feeling you feel right now? That’s hygge (pronounced hoo-ga).
The term is a Danish word that is tough to translate into English. It combines mindfulness, coziness, connection, hospitality and more. Some people even argue that the hygge mindset is the reason that Denmark and other Nordic countries are considered among the happiest countries in the world.
You can learn about hygge, the Danish secret to a happy life, during a special program Tuesday at the Franklin Avenue Library. Presenter Tova Brandt is the Albert Ravenholt curator of Danish-American culture at the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn. She’ll explain why hygge is more than just lighting a couple candles and putting on some sweatpants. Come enjoy a comfy evening and learn how hygge can make you more mindful in your daily life. The program starts at 6:30 p.m.
Can’t make it to the library for the program? Borrow these hygge-related books from the library instead, and go to dmpl.org and search our catalog for even more.
