Perhaps the easiest decision Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer will make this offseason was naming Gary Kubiak as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator Thursday.
Kubiak, who has no intentions of becoming an NFL head coach for the third time after being fired by the Texans in 2013 and retiring after winning a Super Bowl with Denver three years ago, was Zimmer’s assistant head coach/offensive advisor in 2019.
If Kubiak put out word that he wanted to be a head coach again, there would be no shortage of offers. He’s got four Super Bowl rings as a head coach and assistant coach. During Dallas’ search for Jason Garrett’s replacement, Kubiak’s name was linked to the Cowboys, but there was nothing to it, and Mike McCarthy was hired by owner Jerry Jones.
In his first season with the Vikings, Kubiak worked closely with offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski, who was hired as Cleveland’s head coach last week. The smart thing for Zimmer to do was to ask Kubiak to take over the play-calling with Stefanski out of the picture. Kubiak called plays as a head coach and offensive coordinator with the Texans, Broncos and Ravens.
Last season, the Vikings finished 10-6, second in the NFC North to Green Bay. They upset New Orleans at the Superdome in the wild-card round and were eliminated at San Francisco in the divisional round.
Kubiak took a circuitous route to Minnesota. After leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl victory in 2015, Kubiak retired after the 2016 season because of health reasons that had surfaced with the Texans. He spent two years in the Broncos’ personnel department working under general manager John Elway.
Last year, Kubiak turned down an offer to return as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator and moved to the Vikings so he could be reunited with two longtime sidekicks, Rick Dennison and Brian Pariani. Zimmer’s staff also includes son Klint Kubiak, who coaches quarterbacks.
Dennison and Pariani have been with Kubiak in Denver, Houston, Baltimore and now Minnesota. Dennison coaches the Vikings’ offensive line and oversees the running game. Pariani coaches tight ends.
With Kubiak running the offense and coaching quarterback Kirk Cousins, he could be even better next season. In 2018, his fifth season as a starter, Cousins had his best rating as a starter (107.4), fewest interceptions (six), tied for the ost yards per attempt (8.1), fourth most touchdowns (26) and third in completion percentage (69.1).
Kubiak’s fingerprints were on a running game that finished sixth, led by Dalvin Cook’s 1,135 yards and 13 touchdowns in 14 games.
