NEW YORK — Al Horford got to spend a little time with his former team over the weekend when his 76ers and the Celtics found themselves in the same New York hotel. He had a good chat with Gordon Hayward, who was playing very well before fracturing a bone in his right hand three weeks ago.
Horford was enjoying the fact that Hayward had his game back together after the bad leg injury two years ago and some inconsistency on the way back last season.
Hayward is averaging 18.9 points on 55.5 percent shooting (43.3 percent on treys) in eight games — and the scoring includes just nine points in 15 minutes before the injury in San Antonio.
“I’m just happy for him that everyone can actually see his game and what he can do,” said Horford, who left for Philadelphia as a free agent last July. “He hasn’t been able to showcase that. Last year he really wasn’t able to. I think that with the hand stuff, once he gets his rhythm again, he’ll be fine. It might take some time, but he’s going to be fine.”
Horford thinks the same is true for the Celts. But he hasn’t been caught off guard at all by the team getting its chemistry together so quickly in its 14-5 start.
“Well, with coach Stevens it doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “Coach, you know, he’s going to put everyone in position to be successful. I mean, even the year that we were there that Kyrie (Irving) and Gordon were missing and we had Shane Larkin starting or Semi (Ojeleye), he figured out how to do the most with what he had. So I’m not surprised by this.”
That sort of begged the question about how things went wrong last season.
“Last year was just too much,” Horford said. “There were too many guys for coach to satisfy everyone.”
