TCU coach Gary Patterson is still not happy with late call against Oklahoma - The Dallas Morning News

TCU head coach Gary Patterson spoke to reporters Monday as part of the weekly Big 12 coaches teleconference.

Here’s what you need to know from his comments.

Still not happy with officials

With less than two minutes to go in TCU’s loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, Sooners quarterback Jalen Hurts was ruled to have picked up a first down that effectively iced the game. Replays on TV indicated that Hurts was well short of the line, but even after an official review, the call was upheld.

Patterson said he still hasn’t heard anything from the Big 12 office explaining the call. He also compared it to a controversial overturn against Baylor, when TCU quarterback Max Duggan was ruled out of bounds on a would-be touchdown.

“I have not reached out. I’m trying to beat West Virginia, to be honest with you,” he said. “I’m not going to be able to change it. It’s pretty obvious on every film camera you can possibly look at how that would be. I don’t know how you can overturn Max’s run two weeks ago down the sidelines when the (referee) was standing there without conclusive (evidence), and then you won’t overturn that one (against Oklahoma) with more evidence. It is what it is.”

Patterson also said the same crew worked the Oklahoma game that worked the Baylor game when Duggan was ruled out of bounds.

A ‘challenge’ ahead on Friday

TCU has to beat West Virginia on Friday in order to reach the six wins required for bowl eligibility. The Mountaineers are in their first year under head coach Neal Brown, who was previously at Troy. West Virginia dropped five straight Big 12 games this season but have since rebounded to beat No. 24 Kansas State and stay within seven points against No. 21 Oklahoma State.

“I think they’ve gotten better and better and better,” Patterson said. “They’ve become a lot more physical up front defensively on both sides of the ball.”

The Mountaineers switched quarterbacks, replacing Oklahoma transfer Austin Kendall with Bowling Green transfer Jarret Doege, and Patterson said that switch has helped West Virginia.

“They’re a lot better throwing the football. The change of quarterbacks helped them,” he said. “They’re a lot more physical on the offensive line, and they’re running the ball better. We have quite the challenge ahead of us.”

‘Proud’ of the defense

Oklahoma put up 366 rushing yards on TCU last week, but that stat line is misleading. The Sooners needed 64 rushing attempts to hit that mark and averaged less than 6 yards per carry. The Horned Frogs held Oklahoma to 28 points. That was the first time the Sooners had scored less than 30 since Sept. 22, 2018.

Patterson said he trusted his defense to switch up schemes and prevent big plays.

“That was our whole thing, to go to a three-man rush and to, in some ways, what I call slow down. If you want to stop the big plays, surround the run, and fortunately for us, we got some takeaways that helped us do that.”

While the Frogs came away with a loss, Patterson said he was proud of his team after fighting back from a 21-0 hole early in the second quarter.

“Anytime that you can be in the ball game in the fourth quarter the last couple of years against Oklahoma and keep them underneath 30 points is a pretty good successful night,” Patterson said. "We just needed to hold them to one less, that’s what our goal is, and score one more, and we didn’t do that.

“But I was proud the way the kids fought. It was a night game, a lot on the line for (Oklahoma), it was senior night, and our kids, we dug ourselves a hole and they fought back. I was happy for them. I think it proved again, just like we did a couple of weeks ago against Baylor, that we’re just a small fraction away from being the team we want to be.”
