At first blush, this august group of six have several things in common: with the exception of one (who noted no discipline) all are STEM oriented, several are "former" provosts and presidents, and none appear to have any sort of tie to North Dakota – though not a requirement, but was definitely something that was spoken aloud during listening sessions held around the state.
What are the issues? First, not a one noted any field of discipline related to liberal arts. Second, how is it no one from North Dakota qualified? Or didn't any apply? Third, why was this search done so quickly? What was the rush (though, I can think of a couple of reasons)? Fourth, how were the voices of all those that participated in the listening (not hearing) sessions represented?
I'm going to have to go out on a limb and believe that all six are qualified to lead UND, and that the liberal arts will be considered important to the overall education of students. And, that a STEM agenda will not take precedence over the importance of liberal arts to developing a well-rounded, civic-minded student. Furthermore, that the sessions will be open sessions and all questions will be fielded regardless of their complexity or toughness or uncomfortable nature of them.
I encourage all parties with a vested interested in the selection of UND's new president to research the six candidates being pressed forward for consideration.
