Brian Maurer is so happy for Guarantano after career day - 247Sports

The story of Tennessee’s win over Missouri on Saturday night was the passing game and the redemption story of Jarrett Guarantano.

After being maligned for much of the 2019 season, especially after Tennessee’s loss to Guarantano, it looked like Guarantano could be an afterthought for this Vols team. However, he came in off the bench and helped Tennessee beat South Carolina. Then he came in off the bench and helped the Vols beat UAB. Then he came in off the bench and helped the Vols beat Kentucky.

Saturday night’s game against Missouri was his first start since Tennessee lost to Florida back in September, but Guarantano rose to the occasion. The redshirt junior turned in one of the most prolific games in Tennessee history with 415 passing yards and two touchdowns. Guarantano spread the ball around as three different wideouts eclipsed the 100-yard mark. It was a great game for a player who has endured a lot during his time on Rocky Top.

After the game, there was a well-deserved outpouring of praise from everyone, including Guarantano’s fellow quarterback Brian Maurer. Though the two players have been battling for playing time for much of the season, Maurer tweeted out a heartfelt message of support for his fellow signal caller. Maurer has seen what Guarantano has been through, and he was happy to see his teammate succeed.

“I’m so happy for JG, no matter what situation has been thrown at him this season he has remained a team player, and there’s no one else who deserves this more than he does
that’s my brother forever,” Maurer tweeted after the game.

After the game, Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt spoke about why he went back to Guarantano as the starter. The Missouri defense was going to give the Tennessee offense some different looks, and Pruitt wanted a more seasoned quarterback under center to deal with that.

“When you play against these guys, the different looks they give you, you’re going to have to check to different runs at the line of scrimmage,” Pruitt said. “He absolutely gives us the best opportunity to do that right now. And hey, we’ve got confidence in him. The guy has played good. He’s got everything you want to be a good quarterback. And tonight was far and away his best game. So he done a really nice job, made some really good throws. Probably a couple he’d like to have back, but he done a nice job and receivers went and got the ball for him too.”

It’s safe to say Pruitt made the right call as Guarantano turned in his best game as a Tennessee Vol.
