Get happy at the Depressed Cake Shop - Houston Chronicle

If the idea of biting into a gray piece of cake sounds unpleasant, then you haven’t been to the Depressed Cake Shop. At the annual event to raise awareness about depression and mental health issues, baked goods — cakes, cookies and cupcakes and brownies — are deliberately frosted in shades of gray.

And though that color might suggest sadness, the event is anything but. Some of the city’s best pastry chefs and popular bakeries are participating in this year’s bake sale, to be held Sunday at Silver Street Studios from 1 to 5 p.m. Pastry pros are coming from The Dunlavy, 1751 Sea and Bar, Bravery Chef Hall, International Smoke, Nancy’s Hustle, One Fifth, and Sweet Bribery. Also participating: Rudyard’s, Red Dessert Dive, Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Koffeteria, Harris & Essex, Houston Community College Culinary Arts Program, and Eat. Drink. Experience! These professional efforts are also augmented by home bakers who donated “sad” treats - all of which will be available for immediate purchase.

Pastry chef Jody Stevens of JodyCakes.com is hosting the event, which is now in its seventh year. The Depressed Cake Shop has raised more than $38,000 since Stevens founded it to benefit The Montrose Center and NAMI Greater Houston (National Alliance of Mental Illness), both of which provide behavioral health and prevention services.

This year’s bake sale is co-hosted by Laurie Harvey and Kris Sowell, partners in Ladies of Libation who are donating cocktails. There also will be coffee from Katz Coffee and water from Waterloo Sparkling Water.

Attendees will get to bid on one-of-a-kind cake creations that will be on display throughout the event.

“One in four people will suffer from mental health issues during their lifetime. Many of the people close to me have either suffered or do still deal with depression and mental illness,” Stevens said. “I wanted to take this chance to make a difference in spreading the word in Houston by hosting this event. We are using different outlets to discuss such a stigmatized topic. What better way to do it than through a fun afternoon bake sale.”
