The founder of Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream has died, the company announced on Facebook on Tuesday. "Happy" Joe Whitty was 82.
Whitty founded the ice cream and pizza chain in Davenport on Nov. 16, 1972. It is now in six Midwestern states.
He died Tuesday "surrounded by his loving family and close friends," according to a Facebook post on the company's page.
"Joe was deeply loved by his family and friends, and the loss that will be felt by his passing cannot be put into words," the post reads. "In addition to his family, those of us who had the opportunity to work with him are without words to express this tremendous loss. He was an extraordinarily smart and accomplished Entrepreneur who built a company that represents and practices the same principles he used to create and maintain Happy Joe’s for 47 years."
Originally from North Dakota, Whitty moved to Davenport in the 1960s to run the Super Value Bakery on Fourth Street before opening his first restaurant.
Happy Joe's offers pizza, pasta, sandwiches and soft-serve frozen yogurt.
