Raiders happy to return home from game against Lions - FOXSports.com

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Raiders have taken nine long flights, traveled about 20,000 miles and overhauled the bottom portion of their roster since last playing a game at the Oakland Coliseum.

Having survived the nearly seven-week odyssey by winning two of five games to remain in the thick of the AFC playoff race, the Raiders (3-4) are excited to return for a three-game homestand that will determine how long they will stay in contention.

It all starts Sunday against the Detroit Lions (3-3-1).

“It’s going to be rowdy, I know that,” quarterback Derek Carr said. “I think our fans miss us, and I think we miss them. We need a home game. We need to see each other, that’s for sure. We miss one another.”

The Raiders opened the season with back-to-back home games then started off on their trip with games at Minnesota and Indianapolis, followed by a “home” game in London against Chicago, a bye week, and then trips to Green Bay and Houston.

It wasn’t the easiest ordeal for coach Jon Gruden.

“I hope they do it to everybody in our division next year,” he said. “I think everybody should have an opportunity to go on the road for six weeks. Somebody had a great idea for us to do it, I think everybody ought to do it next year. Honestly, it was tough. It was tough because they weren’t close trips. They were overseas trips, they were across the country trips, every one of them. So, it was a challenge, but it allowed our team to bond and spend some time together and we benefited from it.”

It’s been so long between games that the Raiders have 10 players on their 53-man roster who have never even played a regular-season home game in Oakland.

Left guard Richie Incognito is particularly excited, especially after having a few run-ins with the fans in the Black Hole as a visitor, including one memorable one after a touchdown with Buffalo in 2016.

“I remember going to grab the running back and celebrating and everything getting launched out of the stands,” he said. “Bottles and hats and everything. It felt good back then putting it on the Black Hole but now we want to play well, score a bunch of points and get those guys rowdy.”

STREAKING

Detroit’s Matthew Stafford has started 135 straight games, a streak that trails only the ChargersPhilip Rivers (216) among active quarterbacks and he is nearly a season of games ahead of Seattle’s Russell Wilson on the list. Stafford moved past his friend, Matt Ryan, in Week 8 when Atlanta’s quarterback ended his 154-game starting streak in the regular season because of a sprained ankle.

“It doesn’t mean anything other than just I want to be available for those guys,” Stafford said. “I was actually texting Matt last week, trying to figure out if he was going to go or not. I’m buddies with him. I wanted him to keep history going because I know he is a tough guy that has played through a lot in his career.”

ON THE LINE

The strength of the Raiders this season has been the offensive line despite not playing an entire game with the starting unit. Left tackle Kolton Miller is the only starter to remain available all season with Incognito missing two games for a suspension, Gabe Jackson missing five with a knee injury, Trent Brown missing one entire game with a calf injury and center Rodney Hudson leaving with a sprained ankle last week after 10 plays.

Hudson isn’t expected to play this week, but the Raiders have managed just fine. They have allowed only eight sacks all season, one off the franchise low through seven games, and have matched a team record by going three straight games without allowing a sack. Oakland also ranks seventh in the NFL in rushing and is averaging 4.8 yards per carry.

“We know we’re a big physical group,” Incognito said. “But to be able to do it week in and week out is special. We know if we keep Derek clean, he can pick people apart and that’s what’s happening.”

SPREADING THE WEALTH

Detroit has had players reach 100 yards receiving seven times this season, pulling off the feat in seven games for the first time in two-plus decades and just the second time in franchise history. Kenny Golladay has passed the century mark three times, including in the win over the Giants with 123 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Danny Amendola has a pair of 100-yard games for the first time since 2015. Marvin Jones, who caught four touchdown passes in a game, and rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson each have reached the 100-yard mark in one game.

“It seems like week in and week out somebody is doing it,” Stafford said.

TOUCHDOWN TYRELL

Receiver Tyrell Williams returned to Oakland’s lineup after missing two games with a foot injury and caught his fifth TD pass of the season last week. Williams has a TD catch in every game this season but also missed out on some big plays late in the loss last week at Houston. He dropped one deep pass on Oakland’s final drive of a 27-24 loss and had another that hit his hands get broken up by former teammate Gareon Conley.

HERE FOR NOW

Detroit did not trade two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay before the deadline, ending speculation he would be moved. Slay made it clear on social media and in interviews that he was not happy when the team traded safety and captain Quandre Diggs, his close friend, to Seattle earlier this season.

Did he think his tweet and words would get him traded?

“I didn’t care if they did,” he said.

Slay also made it clear, before and after the deadline, that he didn’t care if he was traded or stayed in Detroit.

“I’m a millionaire,” he said.

Bears widely supportive of new NCAA payment ruling - NBCSports.com

The last version of EA Sport’s NCAA Football was released in July of 2013. In June of 2014 EA stopped making it. Up until 2019, Allen Robinson was still playing it.

Despite being outdated by more than half a decade, it’s so beloved that Robinson – who will sometimes play as himself, because why wouldn’t you – kept it in rotation until this year (before eventually replacing it with Madden).

Now, after the NCAA announced plans to allow collegiate athletes to be compensated for their likeness, the odds of an updated NCAA Football, not to mention a return to Robinson’s rotation, are looking good.

“I think that should have always been the case,” Robinson said on Tuesday. “I think it’s good for college sports.”

The NCAA’s move comes on the heels of the California’s Fair Pay To Play Act, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom back in late September. The legislation sets a path for collegiate athletes in the state to benefit off their likeness, whether it be from sponsorships, appearances, video games, etc. And while that was set to go into effect in 2023, the NCAA’s proposed allowance would begin in 2021. It’s a step in the right direction, but now comes the hard part.

“I think that it’s going to be difficult to be fair for all the student athletes,” Chase Daniel said. “I’ve seen some of the arguments back and forth, and you know, are your best players paid more? Are they all paid the same? How does that affect the booster status? Will schools that are more of a rich-booster school get a lot more players because they can pay more? I don’t know. It’s a slippery slope.”

Among those who talked with media on Tuesday afternoon, there was universally-strong support for systemic changes within the NCAA. “I think nowadays, student athletes are smarter,” Daniel said. “I do think they, for the most part, want to be paid.” Commitment to playing college sports is a full-time job, and the scholarship money that many defenders of amateurism point to doesn’t exactly go as far as you’d think.

“I went through it, a lot of guys went through it,” he added. “We were getting scholarship checks that were seven, eight hundred bucks a month in Columbia, Missouri. When rent is $450, after groceries and everything else, you’re left with 200 bucks to spend.”

There’s also the question of fund allocation. Just how much revenue is generated? Who’s actually collecting it, and how far does it stretch?

“I think they’ll find a way to distribute everything equally. I think they’ll figure it out,” Robinson said. “I think it’s one of those things where you look at the Power 5 conferences bringing in a boatload of money.”

Bilal Nichols, who played outside of the Power 5 in the FCS, also said he loved the decision. Especially when it comes to benefiting off your own likeness, players like Nichols, who was drafted out of Delaware, can still see some benefits. It’s also a helpful recruiting tool, but most importantly, according to Nichols, it’s just the right thing to do.

“I feel like they deserve it,” he said. “They work hard, and I feel like they put in the work for it, so why not enjoy the fruits of their labor?”

Neither Nichols, Daniel, or Robinson had much of an idea of what the pay scale could look like, or how the NCAA planned to even approach it. There was, though, an outside-the-box suggestion from Trey Burton.

“I’m a big believer in when you’re done with college, there being a fund for you to be able to draw from,” the tight end said. “I don’t think it should be a couple thousands of dollars, I think it should be a couple hundred a month. And then, at the end of the careers, when they’re done – whether they get their degree or play for four years – there’s a fund of X amount of dollars they can draw out yearly.”

Burton said that a fund like that would be useful to undrafted players – like himself – as they try to sort through their options. Such a tiny percentage of college players continue on at any professional level, much less being taken in the NFL Draft.

“I understand the argument of amateurism,” he said. “You don’t want to have to pay these guys because then it turns into who gets to pay who more, and recruiting. I understand that, but I do think that they do need more money than they’re getting currently.”

Happy Doll-o-ween! Museum Displays Its Creepiest Haunted Dolls - Hyperallergic

The winner from the History Center of Olmsted County’s Halloween creepy doll contest, now master of all it surveys, contemplates its next kill. (All images courtesy of History Center of Olmsted County.)

One might argue that most dolls are a little bit creepy — me, I am arguing that — but the History Center of Olmsted County in Rochester, Minnesota is embracing the Halloween holiday season with a showcase of nothing but the creepiest dolls from its collection of historical and clearly damned objects. We all know the classic formula: doll + age + disrepair = nightmare juice, but the History Center has really brought out the big guns.

This doll’s wig is made of human hair, each strand harvested from one of her victims.

Images of dolls from the collection were posted each day to the museum’s Instagram and Facebook, from October 16 to the 24, to rack up likes as votes for the creepiest doll. One doll has whited-out eyes, from where her open-and-shut eyelids stopped responding. One doll looks like if the tethered little boy from Us had a doll counterpart to, I dunno, a teddy bear? Honestly, it has one arm and is so creepy I can’t look at it long enough to create a good metaphor. One doll has HUMAN HAIR. The contest has been so popular, all nine dolls from the historical haunted collection, plus fifteen more, will be on display at the History Center from October 29 to December 1, so if you aren’t able to make it out for extended-hours Halloween tonight, you still will have a chance to see things you can never unsee and seed future therapy for your children!

If you avoid eating Halloween candy because you’re afraid it will make you fat, this doll will come to live in your stomach. At night you will hear it crying.

The museum, for its part, obviously cherishes the local history attached to these dolls, as a part of a wider collection that champions Olmsted Country heritage. As would we all, if we were the sole proud survivors of a people murdered by haunted dolls, who have just been waiting for their moment to rise again and taste blood! The winner, revealed today, is of course the Us doll — in honor of the big win, at midnight this doll will come alive and stare through the gloom of a darkened bedroom at one of the people who voted for it! Second and third runners up will scrabble around in the walls. That’s why you don’t fuck with dolls, guys. It’s all fun and games until they know where you sleep.

This doll isn’t angry with you, she’s just disappointed. But disappointed in a way where she still has to kill you, sorry.
Just by looking at this doll, you have entered into an unholy agreement to do one favor for Satan.
Just because her eyes won’t open doesn’t mean she can’t see you. She is always watching.

Kudos to the History Center of Olmsted, for getting the whole internet in on the scariest of scares this Halloween! Lock your doors and windows, even though it doesn’t matter because haunted dolls can get in places you won’t even think of! Happy Halloween!

12 Big Signs of Happy, Healthy Relationships - Fatherly

What makes a healthy relationship? A fat bank account, well-behaved kids don’t hurt, and a big closet of fun sex-night costumes don’t hurt. But in all honesty, what makes a happy marriage is a commitment to, well, making a happy marriage. It sounds obvious, but it’s true: in order to have a healthy, satisfying relationship husbands and wives have to actively work to keep it happy: interrogating their communication methods, making sure to treat one and other with respect, making sure you both have the ability to grow independently. So, what are some signs of couples who are doing it right? Here are some ways to know what you’re doing well — and what you might need to focus on a bit more.

They Treat One Another With Respect, Not Contempt

Every couple fights. And everyone says things they don’t mean in the heat of the moment. But, when there’s legitimate bile behind the berating, it’s a problem. “Contempt is a genuine devaluing and disrespect for the other person,” Raffi Bilek, LCSW-C, a marriage counselor and director of the Baltimore Therapy Center, told us. “Respect is essential in a marriage, and it can still exist even in the face of disagreement or anger. But, when you see your spouse as someone unworthy of your respect, your marriage is likely to go downhill from there.”

In a relationship, mutual respect looks like speaking to one another in a respectful and considerate fashion, keeping your partner in mind when you’re making decisions, and responding to your partners needs and wants,” says Saba Harouni Lurie, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and founder and owner of Take Root Therapy in Los Angeles. “That doesn’t mean necessarily sacrificing yourself in order to make or keep your partner happy, but it means communicating with love, even when it’s difficult.”

They Tell One Another The Truth (Most of the Time)

No, you don’t have to tell your partner everything everything. But truthfulness appears to be a major factor in keeping couples happy in the long term. In his interviews with older people for the Legacy Project at Cornell, Dr. Karl Pillemer, Ph.D., sociologist at Cornell University and the author of 30 Lessons for Loving: Advice From the Wisest Americans on Love, Relationships, and Marriage, says that couples cited honesty and open communication as the two most important elements of a successful, lasting relationship. When asked what they regretted most, the number one answer was that they weren’t able to be fully honest with their partners. Being honest has its rewards.

They Don’t Ignore One Another

Marriage is built on a foundation of good communication. But when one partner regularly gets distracted or acts like they have better things to do while their partner is speaking, contempt can easily flourish. Phubbing, the act of mindlessly scrolling through one’s phone while someone else is speaking, is a common pain point. Will you tune out the occasional conversation? Sure, you’re only human. But marriage is a game of odds. And couples who often listen to one another no matter how small or large the discussion are on surer footing.

They Control Their Body Language

Body language speaks volumes in any relationship. Listening to [your spouse] or speaking your mind with crossed arms might send the message you are hiding something or that you have your guard up,” says Sullivan. “This can make your partner feel like you aren’t connecting,” Maria Sullivan, a relationship expert and vice president of dating.com explained to us. Couples who are mindful of how they’re body language affects those around them, have better conversations, and a healthier marriage.

They Avoid Complacency

The roommate phase is a real phenomenon. If you find yourself falling into familiar patterns, it can breed boredom and disinterest, which can lead to other, more toxic, behaviors working their way into the marriage. “If your partner isn’t receptive to trying something different, like a class or exploring a new location, this can discourage partners from experiencing the joys that married life has to offer,” Robinson says. Complacency quickly leads to contempt. Couples who try new things and actively work to bring new things into a marriage are often happier for it.

They Let Their Partner Grow Separately

It’s crucial to grow together. But it’s also important for partners to let one another grow on their own. Being needy and clingy all the time can be a drain on your partner’s emotions and ultimately lead to them giving you attention out of obligation as opposed to desire. Eventually they will start to look at your relationship as a job, one that they might be looking to quit.

“Letting your partner grow separately from you is an important factor is personal fulfillment,” Sullivan told us. “Remember, you are two individuals who are in love, not a packaged couple.”

They Go to Counseling When Issues Arise

Marriage counseling is a good thing. It allows you to speak about issues with a knowledgeable third party who can help you gain perspective. “Whatever the problem is, if you have been unable to solve it on your own, a professional couple’s counselor can help enormously,” Bilek says. “The act of simply going to counseling is an expression of your commitment to each other.”

They Compliment More Than They Criticize

Criticisms are necessary in any relationship. That’s how partners evolve and understand issues. But criticism alone cannot sustain a partnership. “If you are criticizing each other more than you’re complimenting each other, you’re headed for trouble,” Bilek says. “In fact, research shows that you need five positive statements to counteract every negative one in order to keep a relationship on good terms.”

They Appreciate One Another

Appreciation is everything in a marriage. And couples who make it a point to validate one another are in a better place. “Validation is for being seen for what you’re contributing, even if it’s mundane and routine,” Dr. Emily Upshur, a licensed clinical psychologist in New York City, told us. Parenting is a never-ending game of Did I Just Do Anything Right? It’s easy to feel doubt, let alone any sense of confidence. Providing validation fights that. The words can vary but the subtext remains: I saw that and I’m not keeping it to myself.

They Don’t Make Assumptions About Household Chores

It’s easy for a couple to think that they’ll be great at splitting household duties and internalize their thoughts without every discussing it. This leads to serious problems because assumptions are made. The best advice? Talk about who’s doing what. “The couples who have the conversation [about division of household labor] are the ones who are more aware of it and they actually do the best,” says Darcy Lockman, a mom, psychologist, and author of All the Rage. “It’s when couples imagine, like my husband and I did, that it’ll just work out that way. That’s when people get into some trouble because things do tend to default to mothers without explicit conversations.”

They Schedule Time to Feel Like a Couple

Parenting often comes with a biggie-sized side order of identity crisis. It’s easy to feel like roommates or co-workers instead of romantic partners. Couples must be sure to take measures to recognize this side. One couple we spoke to offered this wisdom: “Part of our issue was internal battles that Rebecca was having about parts of her that she felt like she had lost when she became a mom. About every two weeks, she would go through this cycle of feeling like she needed to get away. So, we just started scheduling, every two weeks, even if it’s just overnight, we do something that feeds that side of her. We put things in place to remember that she’s not just a mom.” Scheduling time to satisfy a partner’s needs goes a long way.

Happy Podoween! Let's compare the specs of 2019's wireless earbuds - ZDNet

When Apple announced the AirPods in 2016, there wasn't much competition for the completely wireless earbuds. As we near the end of 2019, there's plenty of competition from some of the biggest names in tech. Just in the past few months, we've seen announcements from Amazon , Google , Microsoft , and, earlier this year, Samsung .

Most recently, Apple announced the AirPods Pro , matching a lot of features you'll find in its newfound competitors' offerings.

Here's a simple chart that breaks down the main features you can expect to find in this year's crop of wireless earbuds:

AirPods Pro Echo Buds Galaxy Buds Surface Earbuds Pixel Buds 2
Price $249 $129 $129 $249 $179
Availability Shipping now Shipping now Shipping now TBD Q2 2020
Active Noise Cancellation Yes Yes No Yes Yes

Battery life with case 24 hours 20 hours 7 hours 24 hours 24 hours
Water/Sweat rating IPX4 IPX4 IPX2 IPX4 IPX4
Personal Assistant Siri Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant Google Assistant, Siri Cortana, Google Assistant, Siri Google Assistant

I didn't include the second-generation AirPods, but Apple is still selling those for $159 or $199, depending on whether you want a wireless charging case or not.

There's a lot of feature parity across the board here, but if you're an iPhone user, your decision comes down to which version of AirPods you want to spend money on. The way Apple can integrate AirPods with iOS is unmatched by anything else available, and arguably worth any added cost that AirPods carry.

I haven't had a chance to test Amazon's Echo Buds but found the Galaxy Buds to offer a solid listening experience. We're still waiting for an official launch date for Microsoft's Surface Earbuds, and Google's new Pixel Buds won't ship until the second quarter of 2020.

In the video at the top of this post, Jason Squared's co-host, Jason Perlow, and I dive into more details and thoughts about all of the options we now have, including a dark horse company that's making some high-quality audio products, according to Perlow.

What do you think about the abundance of wireless earbuds we now have? Are you waiting for some of the unreleased products, or springing for AirPods Pro?

Powell's take on banking rules should make Elizabeth Warren happy, but not Wall Street - CNBC

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said this week that the central bank is unlikely to alter its liquidity requirements for banks, a position that may endear him to Sen. Elizabeth Warren but also could lead to more headaches for the industry.

During a news conference Wednesday, Powell was asked whether the Fed might change the rules for big banks following the mid-September money crunch that sent very short-term lending rates surging.

The Fed has since responded with programs aimed at keeping its overnight funds rate within its quarter-point target range, as well as making sure there's enough liquidity in the system to keep the short-term funding operations, known as repo, running smoothly.

Banking analysts have raised questions, though, over whether that will be enough. While Powell said the Fed continues to watch the issue, he said a change in the post-financial crisis liquidity rules likely won't be part of its action plan.

"Would we lower capital liquidity requirements? ... I don't think so," he said in response to a reporter's question. "I don't think that's where this goes."

The response may not have been what banking executives were hoping to hear, but it could be pleasing to Warren, the Democratic presidential candidate who has been the industry's harshest critic on Capitol Hill.

In a recent letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Warren stated that she is concerned banks will use the repo disturbances to try to relax the requirements for how much cash and top-tier assets they must hold on their balance sheets.

"Banks are reporting profits at record, levels, and it would be painfully ironic if unexplained chaos in a small corner of the banking market became an excuse to further loosen rules that protect the economy from these types of risks," wrote Warren, who also is a member of the Senate Banking Committee.

'Reacting and posturing' to Warren

Powell noted that he found it a "surprise" that banks did not deploy more of their cash into the system when the repo markets stumbled. He and other Fed officials attributed the disturbances to cash getting sucked out of the system due to corporate tax payments coming due and an unusually large settlement of Treasury auctions.

Under ideal circumstances, banks would have stepped in and used their ample reserves — more than $1.4 trillion at the time of the repo problems — to keep the system flowing.

Powell said reserves were "well above" the level industry executives deemed comfortable "and yet they didn't  deploy that liquidity when there seemed to be great opportunities to do that. That didn't happen. So why is that? We're doing careful analysis of that."

However, his seeming determination to exclude lowering liquidity requirements could cause issues ahead.

"I think he's reacting and posturing around Elizabeth Warren," said investment banking veteran Christopher Whalen, head of Whalen Global Advisors. "If we had some leadership in the White House, they might speak up at his point and say, 'Yeah, we have to look at this, there's clearly a problem' and put the onus back on Warren, who doesn't understand this."

CNBC has reached out to Warren for comment.

There have been other concerns raised about the position banks are in regarding cash deployment specifically in the repo market.

J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said that while his bank's reserves are large, it is reluctant to part with them.

"That cash, we believe, is required under resolution and recovery and liquidity stress testing," Dimon said during the bank's earnings call. "And therefore, we could not redeploy it into repo market, which we would have been happy to do. And I think it's up to the regulators to decide they want to recalibrate the kind of liquidity they expect us to keep in that account."

A 'combustible cocktail'

The bank liquidity issues are part of a larger conversation in the market over whether the Fed has its arms around the short-term funding issues. Some analysts expect bigger problems to occur as the year comes to a close and banks deemed systemically important need to window-dress their balance sheets to meet Basel 3 stability requirements, which were established to assess too-big-to-fail banks.

Lower-than-needed reserves plus other constraints are creating a "'combustible cocktail' of potential year-end funding pressures," Mark Cabana, rates strategist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, said in a note to clients. "We believe the Fed is well aware of this issue and will do what is necessary to address the reserve shortage problem."

Cabana believes a mix of increased T-bill purchases, longer-term repo operations and decreasing the Treasury cash balance can address some of the issues, though he still thinks there will be issues heading into year-end.

Whalen suggested, as have others, that the Fed ought to institute a standing repo facility that would allow banks to convert their Treasurys into reserves during periods of market stress. St. Louis Fed economists earlier this year endorsed such a plan.

"This is the problem: The board and the staff have their heads buried in the sand because they do not want to admit they are wrong. This is why they don't want to formalize a standing repo facility that's open to the broad market," Whalen said. "If I were Mr. Powell, I would keep the issues open and tell the staff to look at them in a holistic way. Then I would send these recommendations to the Hill and tell them to look at them. What they're doing is not enough."

Remember To Follow These Safety Tips To Ensure A Happy, Safe Halloween - CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Authorities across South Florida are urging trick-or-treaters and their parents to take the appropriate safety precautions before heading out to collect candy on Thursday evening.

Here are some tips offered by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to ensure a happy and safe Halloween:

    • • Make sure that children are always accompanied by an adult: There’s no substitute for direct and constant safety supervision.
    • • Plan your trick-or-treating so that your route is completed before dark.
    • • If you must trick-or-treat after dark, help assure that everyone can be seen by using flashlights or glow sticks.
    • • Never use candles or lanterns with open flames.
    • • Be traffic alert: Stay on sidewalks, walk facing traffic and cross streets only at intersections.
    • • If you are driving Halloween night, be on the lookout for trick-or-treaters. Use extreme caution and drive slowly.
    • • Trick-or-treat in a group and stay together: Only approach houses that have outside lights on. Be alert of your surroundings and trick-or-treat in familiar, well-lit areas.
    • • Make sure that everyone can easily be seen in low light: Apply stripes of reflective tape across the front and the back of children’s costumes and adults’ clothing, and wear costumes that are brightly colored.
    • • Costumes should be completely flame-retardant: This includes wigs, beards and capes.
    • • Safety first: Avoid masks that restrict a child’s view or make it difficult to breathe.
    • • Make sure that costumes fit properly: Loose or long costumes may cause children to trip over or catch on things such as bushes and fences.
    • • Do not allow children to carry any sharp objects: Use props that are pliable and soft in order to avoid injury.
    • • Make sure that trick-or-treaters always have one hand free so they can catch themselves if they fall. Use treat bags that can be carried over one shoulder instead of in both hands.
    • • Children should never eat any treats until an adult has inspected all the candy: Throw away any homemade treats or anything that’s not in a sealed wrapper.
    • • For a much safer alternative, consider taking children to a Halloween party or attend a well-planned, local event instead of trick-or-treating door-to-door.
      • • If your child suffers from any food allergies, check the packaging for contents that may be adverse to his/her health.

As is mentioned on the list above, always accompany your children and plan your route accordingly.

Also, you may be wondering if there are any sex offenders along your trick-or-treating route. You can always check by clicking here. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) keeps an updated database with this information.

Our state has more than 30,000 registered sex offenders who are required to register their permanent addresses with law enforcement.

Knicks' Julius Randle not happy with how he's playing - New York Post

ORLANDO, Fla. — Julius Randle said his goal was to be the team’s leader this season. And he stepped up in the locker room after the Magic’s 95-83 victory over the Knicks that dropped the visitors’ record to 1-4.

Randle said he’s been a culprit in the slow start and has to get better. He put up good numbers, 16 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

He cut his turnover total to three (the Knicks had just 11). But Randle, who had 19 turnovers in the prior three games, pointed to himself as needing to rev up this offense that struggled to hit 80 points Wednesday.

“I’m not honestly feeling great,’’ Randle said in a low voice. “I’m not playing well. I took a little step forward today. Just trying to trust my teammates. I’m not forcing it. But I have a long way to go before I really feel like myself and do what I know I’m capable of.”

At one juncture, after Randle missed a contested shot, coach David Fizdale yelled, “Stop trying to be a hero.” Fizdale also barked the same remark to Bobby Portis at another point in the game.

Randle is glad there are 77 games left to prove he is every bit worth the $63 million contract.

“It’s early,’’ Randle said. “I’d rather have the struggles early, adjusting to playing with nine new players. It’s really difficult in the NBA. I keep watching film. I take my lumps and I’ll get better. It doesn’t discourage me. I feel we have a really good team. I’m just going to keep getting better and keep getting these guys to improve.”

Randle’s numbers are not awful (16.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game), but his turnovers and 3-point shooting are concerns. He is shooting 1 of 12 from deep. Randle said this week the struggle is adapting to the new double-teams he is facing for the first time in his career.

He had been known as a reluctant passer until this season. He’s now in more of a point-forward role.

“We’re getting there,’’ Randle said of Fizdale harping on the lack of ball movement late in games. “Most of the game it was OK until late, when our pace let up a little bit. We just got to trust it. We got to look at the shot clock — all 24 seconds of it.”

Running late? That means you're happy and healthy, study claims - WPLG Local 10

BOSTON - While you may get dirty looks from friends and colleagues for always running late, make sure you let everyone know you'll be getting the last laugh.

A new study from the good folks at the Harvard University Medical School... that's right, the Harvard University... claims that people who run late are actually happier and live longer.

Those who run late operate with a sense of calm, the study shows, according to WRBL.

And if you're always running late, but optimistic, there's even better news. The study claims optimistic people have less chance of developing high blood pressure and heart disease.

Good news all around for those are inconsiderate to other people's plans!

Happy Steamoween - Tampa Bay Times

TAMPA — East Tampa’s Potter Elementary School opened its doors Wednesday afternoon for Steamoween, a family festival that combined light science with community outreach.

Children were given dinner and there were donated Halloween costumes for those who needed them. They had a chance to make slime and little bottle rockets, have their faces painted and watch a robotics demonstration from Middleton High School. Staff took the opportunity to get more responses to a survey that is being used to assess community needs. A representative from nearby Gary Adult School was on hand to sign parents up for job training.

Potter is one of four new community schools, where school and district staff seek to help families meet needs that go beyond their children’s education. Some of the services, including a food pantry, have already begun. But the school wants to hold off on most programs until it has completed its survey.

Happy Joe's workers share their memories about the man who started it all - KWQC-TV6

Quad Cities (KWQC) - Happy Joe’s workers spoke to TV6 about their founder Joe Whitty, 82, who passed away on Tuesday.

A Quad Cities legacy has died. Joe Whitty, 82, died, Tuesday according to a post by his Daughter. “Happy Joe Whitty completed his life’s work today,” Kristel Whitty-Ersan, posted. He now rests in God’s loving arms.” (KWQC/Happy Joe's Pizza)

Whitty is a legend to the Quad Cities and Happy Joe’s workers said they will continue to work hard to keep his legacy alive.

"We are so committed to doing everything that Joe wanted to do --- guest experience, a quality product and just making people happy,” said Hollie Matthys, Happy Joe’s CFO.

Matthys said Whitty touched the lives of so many people.

"I think from the very first time he opened his first store he kind of made a promise that said if I am successful I'm going to give back to the community,” she said.

Whitty made it his mission to help disabled children.

"He's had a Christmas party for children with special needs every year since 1972," said Matthys.

She said he also provided jobs to workers across six Midwestern states.

"There's just not too many people like Joe.” said Matthys. “When you lose someone special like that it can touch your heart and touch the hearts of so many people around you in the community. We have 46 stores in six different states. So I know his Happy Joe feeling has gone out to all of these people."

One of those stores is the Happy Joes in Bettendorf where cashier Madison Sunlin works.

She said Happy Joes has had a place in her heart ever since she rode her bike as a kid.

"Me and my little brother would ride our bikes to the downtown location in Davenport and we would always get pizzas and bring it home,” said Sunlin.

She said she has seen Whitty around at volunteer events for disabled children.

Sunlin said the Happy Joe name rings true.

"He was definitely the character that is Happy Joe's today,” she said. “If it wasn't for him I wouldn't have this job."

While it’s a sad day for the QCA Whitty left a positive legacy behind.

Whitty opened his first Happy Joe’s Pizza location in 1972 in the Village of East Davenport.

According to the company’s website, Whitty was born in North Dakota and moved to Davenport 1966.

Funeral services for him are pending.

Chris Harris “definitely happy” he wasn’t traded - NBCSports.com

Getty Images

Broncos cornerback Chris Harris‘s name was mentioned often as a trade candidate leading up to Tuesday’s trade deadline, but 4 p.m. ET came and went without Harris being shipped to another club.

While there was a time this offseason that Harris was amenable to a deal sending him away from the Broncos, he was not upset to learn that he’d be staying in Denver for the rest of the year.

“I’m definitely happy,” Harris said, via Mike Klis of KUSA. “Now, I can just play and get this behind me and focus on finishing strong the rest of the year. Try and get some wins.”

The Broncos season has not gone well, but Harris said he enjoys his relationships with the team’s coaches and he has other considerations. His wife is due to give birth to a daughter “any day now” and Harris wants to be around for the arrival of his child.

Harris is set for free agency after the season.
